“In 2014 community one expanded programming to include providing community development planning and leadership services. As an existing provider of housing repair and restoration services, the addition of community development to our programming is a natural fit for our work in engaging and mobilizing our community to bring restoration to neighborhoods in need --especially in older, urban areas of our community. We define commmunity development as the process of convening and leading people and institutions in creating and implementing collaborative strategies to restore thriving, sustainable neighborhoods. While housing is often the first lens through which we judge the condition of a neighborhood - and decent, affordable and stable homes are the foundation of neighborhood health -- a strong neighborhood is about more than just housing. A sustainable neighborhood is clean and safe, and provides residents with affordable access to food and life's necessities, jobs, health care, transportation and education among other things. Community development is the definable yet flexible process through which stakeholders -- residents, community service providers, nonprofits, government agencies, churches, businesses, community funders -- collaborate over extended periods of time to focus resources and expertise on efforts to restore nighborhoods and equip residents to sustain the work over time. Defining all of the elements and aspects of community development programming is a challenge as specific needs vary for each community is a challenge as specific needs vary for each community and neighborhood in which is undertaken: minimally, we expect our role to include: - strategic planning for neighborhood improvement that advances the priorities of all stakeholders with an emphasis on those living in the neighborhood - serving as the convening agent for community-wide collaborative part- nerships - leading the process of listening, aligning and action in resident- driven neighborhood revitalization projects - serving as an incubator and/or fiscal sponsor for launching new programs, projects or entities that meet community development needs community development is an investment in people and places that takes time and resources. It will be considered successful when lasting change in a neighborhood is achieved that can be sustained by the neighborhood residents with little or no outside support.”
