EXCEL's mission is to expand post-secondary opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| EXCEL is positioned to become a leader in the post-secondary movement for students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Direct support has included a partnership with the University of Central Missouri to create a residential post-secondary program for students with intellectual disabilities. EXCEL has provided the initial investment to develop the program which has become self-sustaining. EXCEL is currently in an active partnership with the University of Missouri-Kansa City as it also develops a post-secondary opportunity by funding student scholarships. Positive impacts include typically-developing university students, students with intellectual disabilities and their families and potential employers. In December 2017, we entered into a ten month contract with the University of Massachusetts to provide management consulting services to establish the Midwest Inclusive Post Secondary Alliance (MIPSA), a strategic capacity building project to coordinate and support universities, colleges, and the broader base of stakeholders throughout the Midwest as they work to expand and enhance Inclusive Post Secondary Education (IPSE) programming. | $10,500 | $100,843 |

| IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt | 0 | Our Services: Expanding College for Exceptional Learners (EXCEL) is an organization dedicated to increasing post-secondary educational options for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Kansas City regional area. To date, EXCEL has partnered with two area universities to provide funds to develop and implement specialized education for these students so that they can enjoy and benefit from a college experience. Our financial assistance supports program development, specialized educational programing, staff and parent training and student scholarships. EXCEL has also provided advice and inspiration to three other universities outside the Kansas City metropolitan area and has advised parents and educators on post-secondary programs. Prior to 2010, the outlook for Kansas City area students with intellectual disabilities who wanted to continue their education after high school was grim. To date, our two, highly successful university programs have provided 154 area students with a meaningful college experience. Our Board: The EXCEL board is a diverse group of community leaders, business professionals and educators. Three of our board members have doctoral degrees and are experts in educational planning, program development and evaluation. All of our board members have many years of community service and are dedicated to enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities. EXCEL has also convened an advisory board consisting of representatives of special education programs, disability support organizations, post-secondary experts and civic leaders to assist in program design and to broaden awareness of the needs of young adults with intellectual disabilities. Our Fundraising: Excel's fundraising is cyclical. We first partner with an educational institution and develop a program plan. Once a plan is in place, we then solicit funds for the program. To date, we have provided long term, program funding for one university and funds for scholarships and supplemental training to another. Fundraising is underway to expand scholarship opportunities available to students with limited financial means. |
