Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Change the equation's (cteq) mission is to create widespread literacy in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (stem) as an investment in our nation that empowers us all. Cteq helps to engage young people, in particular, underrepresented groups, in stem learning that will enable them to succeed in post-secondary education, hold rewarding jobs, and participate fully as citizens.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Advocacy for stem learningchange the equation is committed to promoting sound state-level policy and practice recommendations to strengthen stem learning for all students. One strategy for addressing this goal this year was the publication of data-driven vital signs reports on data indicators related to stem learning. With funding from the bill & melinda gates foundation, cteq partnered with the american institutes for research (air) to create robust, state-by-state vital signs reports. These reports, released in september 2012, combined a trove of data with recommendations targeted toward each states audience. This analysis is the richest, most complete state-by-state information on stem learning ever assembled. These reports combine publicly available data with new data gleaned from new sources or reanalysis of data in existing sources. The data will be available in brief printed reports as well as in an interactive website that will allow visitors to explore state-by-state data in more depth.the reports presented data on outcomes (or results such as test scores and graduation rates), inputs (such as resources for education) and processes (such as teacher education practices, content standards, assessments, etc.). They include information on state policies that can affect stem education.air completed a pilot analysis of 15 states in 2012, and complete reports on all states and the district of columbia became available in september. Each report was accompanied by recommendations for actions to address shortcomings specific to that state. The vital signs project also encompasses issue-focused briefs, which take a birds eye view of a particular issue in stem. In may, at our 2012 may forum, we first released stem help wanted, which analyzed employed data to show that unemployment in stem occupations was markedly lower than unemployment overall. Media and companies across the country took note of the report. In july, change the equation followed up with lost opportunity, a brief look at the after-school opportunities available across the country. With the help of nielsen research, change the equation was able to take a fine-grained look inside u.s. Households to gauge what kind of stem programming their children were able to take advantage of. These reports aim to arm change the equation member companies with the data and recommendations they can use in high-level conversations with governors and other state leaders. As such, they will present relevant, actionable data in a way that is clear and accessible to both company representatives and state leaders. They will also be pitched to a much broader audience. Cteq will create tools and other guidance to help companies use the reports to greatest effect. Under the guidance of an advocacy committee consisting of cteq members, the organization will also develop and carry out a strategy for mobilizing member ceos to become a more effective voice for improving stem learning at the state level. This series of vital signs reports will continue into 2013, as they were well received. The vital signs reports to be a major contribution to both national and state-level initiatives to improve stem learning for all children.the reports equip cteq member companies to work with governors and other state leaders to stand up for policies and practices based on data that promise to improve stem learning, both in and out of school. The focus is on students in the k-12 age range. Current plans have the vital signs reports coming in two phases.
Activity 3
Inspiring young people cteq partnered with member company e-line media to create ion future, a suite of free online learning games for middle school to early high age youth. Players explore the breadth of stem-based professions and are able to match their interests with different career pathways in stem. The game is accompanied by a facilitators guide for educators, afterschool providers, and family members to assist youth with playing and getting the most benefit from the online activities.ion future includes four games: (1) in stem is everywhere, players race against the clock to explore an array stem careers by identifying the stem professionals involved in the development of objects most tweens and teens use every day, (2) stem career quest: players get to role play school, career, and life choices and follow authentic paths to stem careers based on information provided by hundreds of stem professionals, (3) stem career matchmaker: players enter information about their passions, expected education level, and salary expectations and learn about stem professions that are the best match for them, and (4) stem career profiles: profiles present players with detailed career information, interviews, videos, and other career resources. Ion future was publicly launched on november 2012 during a high- profile event at nasas jet propulsion laboratory in pasadena, california featuring actress and singer keke palmer and bobak ferdowsi, nasas mohawk man. The launch also featured professionals from member companies glaxo smith kline, rolls royce, and viacom. An accompanying webcast highlighted the connection between stem education and the paths students can take to a stem career. More than 2,000 people, including 1,600 students on-location and via the web in classrooms and out-of-school programs across the country, participated in the webcast. Between november 2012 and march 2013, almost 9,000 people have played the game. Cteq will promote the game to expand the number of players in 2013.

IRS990/Description0STRENGTHENING CTEQ MEMBERS' PHILANTHROPYIN 2010-2011, CTEQ WORKED WITH A COMMITTEE OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM MEMBER COMPANIES TO CREATE A SET OF DESIGN PRINCIPLES FOR EFFECTIVE STEM PHILANTHROPY, TOGETHER WITH A RUBRIC TO HELP COMPANIES APPLY THE PRINCIPLES. THESE TOOLS AIM TO HELP MEMBER COMPANIES EXAMINE THEIR OWN PRACTICE AND INCREASE THE IMPACT OF THE RESOURCES THEY DEVOTE TO IMPROVING LEARNING IN STEM. IN 2012, CTEQ EXPANDED ITS PHILANTHROPY WORK BY CONTRACTING WITH WESTED, A NON-PROFIT EVALUATION AND RESEARCH FIRM, TO CREATE STEMWORKS, A SEARCHABLE DATABASE OF STEM LEARNING PROGRAMS THAT MEASURE UP TO THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES. CTEQ AND WESTED REVIEWED AND REFINED THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND RUBRIC, CREATED A RIGOROUS ONLINE APPLICATION FORM FOR PROGRAMS THAT WANTED TO BE FEATURED IN STEMWORKS. PROGRAMS ARE ASKED TO RATE THEMSELVES AGAINST EACH OF THE PRINCIPLES, EXPLAIN THEIR SELF-RATINGS AND THEN PROVIDE EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THOSE RATINGS. WESTED RATERS THEN REVIEW THE APPLICATIONS AND DETERMINE WHETHER APPLICANTS SELF-RATINGS ARE SUPPORTED BY EVIDENCE. PROGRAMS THAT MEET A HIGH BAR ARE ADMITTED INTO STEMWORKS.CTEQ LAUNCHED STEMWORKS IN JUNE OF 2012, AND WESTED REVIEWED APPLICATIONS THROUGH MID-FEBRUARY 2013. THEY SET A VERY HIGH BAR: ONLY 29% OF PROGRAMS THAT APPLIED WERE ADMITTED TO THE DATABASE.

IRS990ScheduleD/Form990ScheduleDPartXIII/Explanation0IN JUNE 2006, THE FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING STANDARDS BOARD (FASB) ISSUED FASB ASC NO. 740-10 [FORMERLY INTERPRETATION NO. 48 (FIN 48)], ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES, WHICH IS AN INTERPRETATION OF ASC 740S (FORMERLY SFAS NO. 109), ACCOUNTING FOR INCOME TAXES. FASB ASC NO. 740-10 CLARIFIES THE ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES RECOGNIZED IN CTEQS FINANCIAL STATEMENTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASC 740S AND PRESCRIBES A RECOGNITION THRESHOLD AND MEASUREMENT ATTRIBUTE FOR THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT RECOGNITION AND MEASUREMENT OF A TAX POSITION TAKEN OR EXPECTED TO BE TAKEN IN A TAX RETURN. FASB ASC NO. 740-10 REQUIRES THE EVALUATION OF TAX POSITIONS TAKEN OR EXPECTED TO BE TAKEN IN THE COURSE OF PREPARING CTEQS TAX RETURN TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE TAX POSITIONS HAVE A MORE-LIKELY-THAN-NOT PROBABILITY OF BEING SUSTAINED BY THE APPLICABLE TAX AUTHORITY. CHANGE THE EQUATION PERFORMED AN EVALUATION OF UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS FOR THE YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2012, AND DETERMINED THAT THERE WERE NO MATTERS THAT WOULD REQUIRE RECOGNITION IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS OR THAT MAY HAVE ANY EFFECT ON ITS TAX-EXEMPT STATUS. AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2012, THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS FOR TAX YEARS 2009 THROUGH 2011 REMAINS OPEN WITH THE U.S. FEDERAL JURISDICTION OR THE VARIOUS STATES AND LOCAL JURISDICTIONS IN WHICH THE ORGANIZATION FILES TAX RETURNS. IT IS THE ORGANIZATIONS POLICY TO RECOGNIZE INTEREST AND/OR PENALTIES RELATED TO UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS, IF ANY, IN INCOME TAX EXPENSE. AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2012, THE ORGANIZATION HAD NO ACCRUALS FOR INTEREST AND/OR PENALTIES.
