Activity 2

Cross Country Educational/Documentary Trip - One of the most exciting elements of Consitituting Americas inaugural year was its cross-country odyssey across America to visit the winners of the We the People 9.17 contest. Over a period of 23 days, founder Janine Turner, accompanied by her daughter, the National Youth Director Juliette Turner and co-chairperson Cathy Gillespie, criss-crossed the nation, visiting the contest winners in their home towns. The journey spanned 6,200 miles and visited nine states from New York to California, and provided public awareness of Constituting America and the contest through local publicity for contest winners, that also included local recognition, in some cases, through student assemblies at the winners schools. The entire cross-country trip was filmed and later edited into a 47 minute video documentary. This fun, fast-paced video was made available to schools and educators in time for the Septmenber 17, Constitution Day, so the schools could use the film as a launching point for classroom learning and discussion of the U.S. Constitution.

Activity 3

Adult Academic Forum - To engage adults in a thoughtful and informative discussion on Americas founding principles, Constituting America launched the 90 in 90 Initiative, an online forum that challenged adults to join with others around the nation in reading and discussing the Constitution and the Federalist Papers over a 90 day period. In addition to gaining exposure to these core founding documents, participants had an opportunity to read essays and analysis contributed by constitutional scholars and historians, as well as by Consituting America Founder Janine Turner and Co-Chair Cathy Gillespie. Citizens were also encouraged to join the national conversation by contributing their own blog posts and comments on the Constitution and the Federalist Papers. As a result of this initiative, thousands of citizens were exposed to Americas founding documents for the very first time. Others, meanwhile, gained a deeper understanding of the countrys Founding Fathers original intent through the essays, commentaries and analysis provided by the seasoned scholars and historians.
