Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Action NC is a community organization and citizen action group that educates, organizes, and mobilizes residents of low-wealth communities to represent their own interests on issues of social and economic concern. Through grassroots outreach and base-building, training and leadership development, and strategic campaign planning and execution, residents work together to determine their priorities and make action plans to win concrete improvements. Our issues include but are not limited to public education, health care access, financial justice, employment and wages, affordable housing and tenant rights, immigrant rights, voting rights, and local investment and development. Through house meetings, community meetings and forums, participation in public hearings, and direct action, residents take their concerns directly to public officials and private sector decision-makers and wage campaigns for specific reforms and a greater voice in decisions that affect them.

We work for greater racial, gender and economic equity through popular education, grassroots organizing and mobilization, training and leadership development, and increased voter participation.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The conflict of interest policy is monitored by the board chair and reviewed and signed at the beginning of the fiscal year by all staff and board members with significant decision-making authority. It is each signator's obligation to disclose any potential conflict as soon as it is known, or reasonably should be known.

IRS990/Desc0ECONOMIC JUSTICE:THE CORE OF OUR ECONOMIC JUSTICE WORK IS ORGANIZING TO RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE TO A LIVING WAGE, AND WE REMAINED ACTIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA'S FIGHT FOR $15 CAMPAIGN. WE ALSO CONTINUED PUSHING FOR PAID SICK AND FAMILY LEAVE LEGISLATION, AND WORKED WITH ALLIES IN THE NC FAMILIES CARE COALITION TO ELEVATE THESE POLICY PRIORITIES IN SPITE OF OUR LEGISLATURE'S INTRANSIGENCE ON WORKPLACE JUSTICE ISSUES. WE ALSO STEPPED UP TENANT ORGANIZING TO PREVENT EVICTIONS, AND WORKED WITH TWO APARTMENT COMPLEXES WHERE TENANTS FACED MASS EVICTION IN SPITE OF THE EVICTION MORATORIUM. OUR WORK HELPED ENSURE THAT NO ONE WAS LEFT HOUSELESS EVEN AS THOSE COMPLEXES SHUTTERED. SINCE MUCH OF THE HEALTH AND ECONOMIC FALLOUT FROM THE PANDEMIC REQUIRED A HUGE RESPONSE TO A HUGE CRISIS, WE DEVOTED MUCH OF OUR ORGANIZING RESOURCES IN 2020 TO INCREASING SUPPORT FOR BIG AND BOLD RESPONSES AT THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEVEL TO THE CRISIS, AND WORKED WITH NATIONAL AND STATE PARTNERS AROUND THE COUNTRY TO ENSURE THAT GOVERNMENTAL RESPONSE WAS EQUITABLE AND AT A SUFFICIENT SCALE TO PROTECT FRONTLINE COMMUNITIES AND WORKERS DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECTED BY THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN. OUR MISSION IS TO ADVANCE RACIAL, GENDER AND ECONOMIC EQUITY THROUGH POPULAR EDUCATION, GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING AND MOBILIZATION, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND INCREASED VOTER PARTICIPATION. OUR ORGANIZATION AND THE GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING SECTOR STEPPED UP WITH A LOT OF ACTIVITY IN 2020 MEETINGS, ACTIONS, EARNED MEDIA EVENTS, STORY COLLECTION, AND WORK ON SOCIAL MEDIA -- TO MAKE SURE OUR MEMBERS AND CONSTITUENT GROUPS WEREN'T LEFT EVEN FURTHER BEHIND BY THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND ECONOMIC CRISIS. IN ADDITION, WE MONITORED COMPLIANCE WITH OUR SUCCESSFUL LAWSUIT TO ENFORCE NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION ACT BY RELEVANT STATE AGENCIES, AND WORKED WITH ALLIES TO KEEP MOVING NORTH CAROLINA TOWARDS AN INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING COMMISSION RATHER THAN A PARTISAN REDISTRICTING PROCESS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0CIVIL RIGHTS:OUR CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZING WORK FALLS INTO SEVERAL BROAD CATEGORIES--CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM AND POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY, IMMIGRANT RIGHTS, AND RACIAL AND GENDER EQUITY. ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUES, WE WORKED WITH OUR MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY AND CITY LEADERS IN CHARLOTTE TO FASHION AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE TO THE UPRISINGS AFTER GEORGE FLOYD'S MURDER, AND THOSE EFFORTS RESULTED IN SEVERAL CONCREATE MEASURES, INCLUDING ADOPTION OF THE EIGHT CAN'T WAIT PRINCIPLES BY CHARLOTTE AND MECKLENBURG COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT, ADDED RESOURCES FOR A VIOLENCE INTERRUPTER PROGRAM, AND CREATION OF AND FUNDING FOR A CRISIS INTERVENTION PROGRAMS THAT DEPLOYS SOCIAL WORKERS AND MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS RATHER THAN POLICE IN APPROPRIATE SITUATIONS. THE CHARLOTTE POLICE ALSO DELIVERED ON A COMMITMENT THEY HAD MADE TO HAVE HOLSTER MONITORS INSTALLED AS PART OF ALL OFFICERS' EQUIPMENT TO ENSURE AN ACCURATE VIDEO RECORD OF POLICE ENCOUNTERS THAT INVOLVE DRAWN WEAPONS. OUR IMMIGRANT RIGHTS ORGANIZING INCLUDED SUPPORT FOR THE DEPORTATION DEFENSE PROJECT WE LAUNCHED EARLY IN THE YEAR, FOR PASSAGE OF THE DREAM ACT AND REINSTATEMENT OF DACA, AND FOR A PATH TO CITIZENSHIP FOR DACA RECIPIENTS AND ESSENTIAL WORKERS. OUR RACIAL AND GENDER EQUITY WORK SCORED A SIGNIFICANT VICTORY WITH ALLIED PARTNERS IN SUPPORT OF THE CROWN ACT PROHIBITING HAIRSTYLE DISCRIMINATION IN EMPLOYMENT WHEN THE GOVERNOR ORDERED ALL STATE AGENCIES TO COMPLY WITH THE CROWN ACT, AND SEVERAL LOCAL JURISDICTIONS WE HAD LOBBIED MADE THE SAME MOVE.WE ALSO ORGANIZED A SERIES OF PUBLIC EVENTS TO PROMOTE CENSUS PARTICIPATION IN BLACK AND BROWN COMMUNITIES IN CHARLOTTE, AND SENT VOLUNTEERS OUT FOR SOCIALLY-DISTANCED DOOR-KNOCKING TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0SOCIAL SAFETY NET:WE WERE PART OF A COALITION THAT GREW UP EARLY IN THE PANDEMIC TO ENSURE THAT NEEDS OF LOWER-WEALTH COMMUNITIES AND THEIR RESIDENTS WOULD BE MET AS GOVERNMENT AT ALL LEVELS RESPONDED TO THOSE URGENT NEEDS WITH LEGISLATION AND RESOURCES. ISSUES WE FOCUSED ON INCLUDED ADEQUATE HEALTHCARE ACCESS BOTH TO LIMIT COVID'S SPREAD AND TO BUILD PUBLIC HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE, INCREASED UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS, COVID PROTECTIONS FOR ESSENTIAL WORKERS, AND AN EVICTION MORATORIUM TO KEEP TENANTS IN THEIR HOMES. WE ORGANIZED SUPPORT FOR THE CARES ACT AND THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN, AND FOUGHT TO ENSURE THAT STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS WOULD RECEIVE SUFFICIENT MONIES TO MEET THE ADDITIONAL NEEDS AND BURDENS FROM THE PANDEMIC. OUR HEALTHCARE ACCESS WORK INCLUDED CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR MEDICAID EXPANSION IN NORTH CAROLINA, A CAMPAIGN TO LOWER PRESCRIPTION DRUG PRICES, AND A CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH AND PROTECT REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACCESS.
