Activity 2

Design boost: in january 2010, startl raised $100,000 for its design boost program. In that same month, startl went public with the announcement of its inaugural boost, which focused exclusively on mobile learning. Applications were reviewed upon arrival by each of the three startl founders and finalists were reviewed by external experts. Startl chose nine teams all focused on mobile learning but varied along a continuum of product stage, product segment, and target audience. This allowed startl to prototype the boost methodology to determine where that program offering can have the biggest impact. Participants of prior design boosts have used the opportunity to fine tune products and approaches to great success. Following startl's first mobile learning design boost in march 2010, two participating companies - launchpad toys and project noah (networked organisms and habitats) - were named finalists in the breakthroughs in mobile learning category for the cooney center prizes for innovation in children's learning.in november 2010, we had our second mobile learning design boost. We had 45 applicants from which we selected 10 teams. The teams that applied to the november boost were further along and more technically talented than those that applied to the march boost. This speaks to a double maturation effect - of the market pipeline and of the startl brand. The positive feedback from the participants surpassed that of the march participants, speaking to our program improvement. At this boost, we also modified the program and offered two $5,000 prizes (audience choice award went to voxy, jury selection prize went to motion math).

Activity 3

Advisory services for launching startups: startl has been inundated with requests from start-ups as well as institutions and investors seeking advice on sourcing, design, financing, and market strategy. Startl has become a free resource and trusted advisor to entrepreneurs and trusted agent to investors and the majority of staff time is spent in this capacity. The advisory services include: learner-centered design, product development, learning sciences and evaluation, marketing and distribution.
