Mission

Saha global's mission is to launch water treatment and solar electricity businesses in communities of the developing world that empower women in the community, provide either clean water or access to electricity to residents of that community. These businesses are run by members of the community and, generate economic growth.

To provide safe drinking water for rural villages in developing countries.

In 2013 we expanded our work to include solar electricity. In the fall of 2013 we launched our first solar electricity business in rural ghana. Similar to our water businesses, the village solar enterprises provide electricity to residents of the community, are run by members of the community and generate economic growth.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0CWS EXPANSION - SOLAR PROGRAM: IN OCTOBER 2013, THE WINNERS OF THE 2012 SOCIAL ENTERPRISE COMPETITION TRAVELLED TO TAMALE, GHANA TO PILOT THEIR IDEA FOR A CWS SOLAR CHARGING BUSINESS IN THE VILLAGE OF WAMBONG. THE FUNDS USED FOR THIS PILOT WERE RAISED IN 2012 BEFORE THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE COMPETITION TOOK PLACE (2012). THE TEAM OF TWO WERE AWARDED A $10,000 PRIZE TO PILOT THEIR WINNING IDEA. THE PRIZE WAS SPONSORED BY FOLEY HOAG, GOODWIN PROCTER, WOLF GREENFIELD (ALL DONATIONS WERE MADE IN 2012). THE $10,000 PRIZE COVERED ALL OF THEIR TRAVEL EXPENSES AND PROJECT EXPENSES. THIS PILOT PROVIDED ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY TO OVER 1,000 PEOPLE AND PROVIDED JOBS TO 2 WOMEN FROM THE VILLAGE. ALSO IN OCTOBER 2013, CWS BEGAN A PARTNERSHIP WITH NEXT STEP LIVING (NSL). NSL LAUNCHED A CHARITABLE GIVING PROGRAM CALLED NEXT STEP GIVING AND CWS WAS SELECTED AS THEIR FIRST NON-PROFIT PARTNER. NSL MAKES A DONATION TO CWS EVERY MONTH AND THE DONATIONS ARE TO BE USED TO GROW OUR SOLAR PROGRAM IN GHANA. IN MARCH 2014, CWS USED THESE FUNDS TO LAUNCH OUR SECOND SOLAR BUSINESS IN KURUGU VOHOYILI. THIS BUSINESS PROVIDES ELECTRICITY TO APPROXIMATELY 200 PEOPLE AND JOBS TO 2 WOMEN FROM THE VILLAGE.IN APRIL 2014, CWS WILL BE USING THESE FUNDS TO LAUNCH TWO MORE SOLAR BUSINESSES IN GHANA.

EACH STAFF MEMBER (THERE ARE 4 FULL-TIME AND 1 PART-TIME) IS IN CHARGE OF 10-14 VILLAGES. THEY VISIT BETWEEN 2-4 VILLAGES EACH DAY. WHEN IN THE VILLAGE, STAFF MEMBERS SPEAK WITH THE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS WHO RUN THE WATER BUSINESSES AND INTERVIEW THEM ABOUT WATER SALES. THEY CHECK THE WATER LEVELS IN THE WATER TREATMENT CENTERS AND VISIT BETWEEN 6-10 HOUSES IN EACH COMMUNITY TO CHECK TO SEE IF COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE STORING WATER CORRECTLY IN THEIR HOMES. ONCE A MONTH, THE STAFF MEMBERS TAKE WATER SAMPLES FROM EACH VILLAGE TO TEST IN THE LAB. THEY TEST FOR BOTH E.COLI AND TOTAL COLIFORM TO ENSURE THAT THE WATER SOLD AT THE CWS WATER BUSINESS IS SAFE TO DRINK. STAFF MEMBERS REPORT TO CWS GHANA COUNTRY DIRECTOR BRIANAN KIERNAN, WHO WAS THE GHANA COUNTRY DIRECTOR UNTIL AUGUST 2013, WAS A FULL-TIME VOLUNTEER. CWS PAID FOR ALL OF MS. KIERNANS TRAVEL EXPENSES AS WELL AS A MONTHLY STIPEND FOR MEALS DURING THIS TIME. MS. KIERNAN REPORTED TO CWS WEST AFRICA REGIONAL DIRECTOR, KATHRYN PADGETT. IN AUGUST 2013, MS. PADGETT LEFT CWS AND MS. KIERNAN WAS PROMOTED TO WEST AFRICA REGIONAL DIRECTOR, WHICH IS A FULL-TIME SALARIED POSITION. IN THIS ROLE, MS. KIERNAN REPORTS TO CWS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, KATHERINE CLOPECK.
