Activity 2

Hunger fighters network: nearly half of philadelphia's food pantries must turn people away because they don't have enough capacity to provide enough food. Through its hunger fighters network, the coalition builds the capacity of more than 120 food pantries and soup kitchens in the greater philadelphia region. We provide equipment so that these small grassroots programs can store fresh and healthy food; we connect the programs with additional food resources so they can meet demand; we provide training and information on useful resources that coordinators can pass on to their clients through the victory in partnership project; and we provide fundraising opportunities, like the walk against hunger, which is the largest public hunger event in the state, drawing 4,000 people and raising $250,000.

Activity 3

Policy center: using data gained through its work with food pantries and direct service to snap (food stamp) clients, the coalition advocates for responsible policy that meets the real need in the community. The coalition is one of pennsylvania's leading advocates on snap policy, working closely with the department of public welfare to improve state administration of the program. On the federal level, the coalition partners with other advocacy organizations to improve hunger and nutrition policies through the farm bill, which funds snap, and child nutrition reauthorization act, which provides food to low-income children across the country.
