“ZAMBIA - With a population of 13,089,000 Zambia ranks low on the Human Development Index--141th out of 187 countries. About half of Zambians are unemployed and more than 85 percent live below the poverty line. Life in Zambia is difficult. One of the poorest countries in the world, it also has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infections. For women and girls, these problems are compounded by gender-based discrimination and violence that too often robs them of a bright future. In 2014 Golf Fore Africa launched a new program to bring clean water to 117 villages in Zambia. We were able to provide increased access to sustainable and safe water to 12,000 poor and vulnerable school children and people living in rural communities. Our implementing partner World Vision drilled boreholes, rehabilitated water points, formed water committees, and trained community members in pump maintenance and repairs. We increased access to improved sanitation by constructing VIP latrines, and training community members in sanitation practices. GFA staff and board members visited Zambia 2 times in 2014 to dedicate wells.”

“ZAMBIA CONTINUED - Golf Fore Africa provided 1600 backpacks filled with school supplies to children in Zambia. These were shipped to Zambia and distributed by Golf Fore Africa board members in December of 2014. Golf Fore Africa funded a construction project at Siantete School in Zambia to allow more students access to education. In the rural Siantete area, nearly 700 children are attending school in crowded conditions that impact their ability to learn. About 67 students are in each classroom, significantly higher than the 45 students per classroom recommended by the Zambia Ministry of Education. In addition, the school has been unable to attract and retain qualified teachers due to a lack of adequate teachers housing. Because of the housing shortage, the school currently has only nine teachers versus the 14 necessary to adequately operate the school.”

“ZAMBIA CONTINUED - Golf Fore Africa is working with the World Vision program Strong Women Strong World group to bring hope to women and girls through a unique program developed to address the needs identified by the women and girls themselves and the government of Zambia. The two components of this program are access to education and livelihood, both of which offer a chance for a brighter future and the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. Golf Fore Africa believes that helping girls receive an education, specifically secondary and college, will open doors for a brighter future. Primary and secondary education give girls and young women tools to alleviate poverty, as schooling will help them earn higher wages and make improved life choices, such as delayed marriage. Girls in ERE safe house in Zambia were provided with golf shirts donated from US Open to World Vision ERE Program.”

“NIGER - With a population of 17,800,000, Niger ranks last on the Human Development Index-187th out of 187 countries. Niger is the largest country is West Africa. More than half of the population lives below the poverty line. 89.9 percent of the population are multidimensionally poor according to the Human Development Report. 58 percent of the population lack access to water and 96 percent lack access to sanitation. In 2014 Golf Fore Africa provided 1000 people in Niger access to clean drinking water. Through our gift the Niger Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Program is helping families and communities increase their sustainable access to clean water and improved sanitation facilities and adopt good hygiene practices. GFA board member visited Niger in 2014 to view the water projects.”

“MALI - With a population of 15,300,00, Mali ranks low on the Human Development Index being 176th out of 187 countries. Mali is a landlocked country with vast deserts and a long dry-season, where many people lack access to clean water and sanitation. It is one of the poorest countries in the world and has both a high infectious disease and one of highest infant mortality rates in the world. 46 percent of the population lack access to clean water. In 2014 Golf Fore Africa provided 1000 people in Mali access to sustainable and clean water. In a country faced with chronic instability, we are empowering communities to improve their situation with life-saving clean water and improved sanitation and hygiene to prevent illness. GFA board member visited Mali in 2014 to view the water projects.”
