Additional Explanations

Page 1 Part 1 Line 19

The Organization has established a single entity designated fund at the California Community Foundation (CCF). This fund allows donors to contribute to the CCF with a designation to the Organization. The Organization can request grants from this fund. The balance in the fund was $72,369 on December 31, 2015. Donor contributions to this CCF fund belong to the CCF. When CCF grants funds to the Organization, then the Organization records the income. Because of this the Organization can control timing of income from the CCF and therefore the net surplus or deficit for any year. The Organization chose to hold funds at the CCF as reserves to earn interest from a short-term investment pool. The Organization had deficit of expenses over revenue for the year ended December 31, 2014. On December 27, 2013, $100,000 of restricted monies were received. These funds were received in the last few days of 2013, so the income could not be spent in 2013. the income was received in 2013 but spent in the year ended December 31, 2014 therefore contributing $100,000 to the deficit in 2014. In addition, during the year ended December 31, 2014, $112,400 was contributed by donors to the Organization's designated fund at the CCF. If funds had been transferred from the CCF fund in 2014, the deficit could have been reduced. the deficit in 2014 is largely a timing issue. The Organization has a deficit of expenses over revenue of $35,244 in the year ended December 31, 2015. During the year ended December 31, 2015 donors contributed $64,286 to the CCF designated fund for the Organization. If these funds had been transferred from the CCF to the Organization the deficit would have been eliminated.

IRS990/Desc0Our signature training programs are shepherding an emerging profession, generating qualified professionals to meet challenging community needs, and offering a sustainable model for empowering the community at the local, national and international level:The Social Emotional Arts (SEA) Certificate Program continues to attract a diverse community of trainees (educators, artists, arts educators, mental health professionals, veterans of other professions who are making career or life transitions, and more). We offered our first summer intensive and had 3 participants from the east coast, 1 from Arizona, 1 from rural Humboldt County, and 1 from Korea. Beat the Odds: Social and Emotional Skill Building Delivered in a Framework of Drumming Our Beat the Odds also continues to attract representatives from a wide variety of school districts and community agencies in California, other states, and other countries. In addition, people from other states and countries purchase our curriculum materials without taking the training. The curriculum comes in the form of a scripted manual, for sustainability and integrity of delivery. We arranged for delivery of Beat the Odds at Charles Drew Middle School an LAUSD school with no music programs in South Los Angeles as well as for special education classrooms at the following schools in Los Angeles Unified School District: Lane Elementary, Taper Elementary and Mack Elementary. We also received a grant for $2,500 from The House of Blues Music Forward Foundation to bring Beat the Odds to Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez High School for College and Career Preparation in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Mendez is one of 16 underperforming schools in Boyle Heights, Watts, and South LA that has been designated as a Partnership for LA school, receiving support from the City of Los Angeles.Dance for All: Social and Emotional Learning through Creative Movement We offered this training program for the first time, twice this year. It was originally designed for adults and adolescents with developmental disabilities; however, it is adaptable to any population. The curriculum comes in the form of a scripted manual, for sustainability and integrity of delivery.Medical Social Emotional Arts Toolkit We recruited and began consulting with a dozen creative arts therapists to develop this new training program that supports the social-emotional wellbeing of hospital patients and care providers. In addition, the Toolkit is appropriate for many other settings such as residential centers for older adults, assisted living facilities, schools and domestic violence/homeless shelters. It is intended to help:create rapport and connection, evoke positive emotions and bolster resilience, empower patients in managing stress, pain and the environment, facilitate verbal and nonverbal communication, strengthen the patients sense of self as a creative being rather than one who is ill, manage grief and loss Fear of Falling: Rhythm and Movement Program (RAMP) RAMP is an innovative drumming and movement-based program for improving quality of life and preventing falls in older adults or other ages with neurological challenges. The program will strengthen balance, coordination, gait and mobility through active participation in group activities that are simultaneously emotionally and socially rewarding. We recruited and began consulting with seven professionals in dance/movement therapy, movement and/or rhythm, most of whom have expertise with people living with neurological disorders. We also recruited two Social Emotional Arts Certificate Program trainees with backgrounds in dance/movement and music to draft the curriculum materials.Special Education Study: We completed a study of 7 special education classrooms in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District where we trained teachers to deliver our program, Beat the Odds: Social and Emotional Skill Building Delivered in a Framework of Drumming, to their students. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0BELOW IS PART 4A CONTINUEDCollaborations:Turnaround Arts: CA We conducted a comprehensive needs assessment (in collaboration with Loyola Marymount University MFT/Art Therapy Program) and delivered professional development for staff at Hoopa Valley Elementary School on an American Indian reservation in Northern California and also delivered professional development for staff at Warren Lane Elementary School in Inglewood, CA. Training sessions were designed simultaneously to offer social-emotional learning tools for working with students and support staff community-building objectives.National Center for Creative Aging We assisted in expanding the network for an LA-based symposium for 2016 and collaborated on program planning to showcase their online creative support program for caregivers. Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) UCLArts and Healing (supported and operated by the Arts and Healing Initiative) became an organizational member of the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine, and Ping Ho, Executive Director of the UCLArts and Healing/Arts and Healing Initiative became a member of the Association Leadership Council for interprofessional dialogue on education, research, and advocacy in integrative medicine.Expressive Media (EM) EM is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission aligns well with ours. We are collaborating on a joint national conference. Our mid-year constituent survey showed strong interest in a Los Angeles-based conference, and specified preferences for location and time of year. It also showed satisfaction with our current newsletter content (that incorporates content relevant to those outside LA as well) and frequency of delivery. Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Monica (SMBGC) We entered into an agreement with the SMBGC to give free trainings to their staff at 2 points in the year, in exchange for use of their space on weekends during their off hours. In addition, SMBGC staff will be able to take any of our programs or training programs free of charge. This is a milestone agreement because it meets needs on both sides, without any net cost to either organization. We have also arranged for SMBGC to serve as a practicum site for our Social Emotional Arts Certificate Program trainees, as they serve kids from ages 7-17, and our Social Emotional Arts Certificate Program prepares them to work with children and adolescents in large groups. YWCA Santa Monica/Westside We developed and regularly deliver the drumming and flash mob dance components of the daylong A Girl's Voice program, to strengthen the social-emotional, self-expressive health and leadership skills of 5th grade girls in preparing them to deal with the social pressures of middle school. The UCLA student-run Creative Minds Project (CMP) CMP is a partnership between UCLArts and Healing, the Creative Minds student group at UCLA, and Students for Integrative Medicine at UCLA. The UCLA CMP offers pro bono services (by creative arts therapy professionals and interns who get supervised hours and experience, and UCLA undergraduate volunteer assistants) to agencies serving persons who are homeless or living with mental illness. We support CMP by offering their volunteers free access to our programs and training programs, and CMP supports UCLArts and Healing by allowing members of the general public to pay to attend its free training programs for its volunteers. CMP currently serves Ocean Park Community Center in Santa Monica and a veterans group at PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) in West Los Angeles. Key individual or panel presentations:BARD College Masters in Teaching Program taught 25 teachers-in-training enrolled in a course on Language, Literacy and Learning how to use rhythm and poetry to facilitate triple objectives in arts education, social-emotional and academic learning.Five Acres Delivered a community building through drumming session for the organizations El Monte-based staff of mental health therapists, administrative st

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5The Organization has established a single entity designated fund at the California Community Foundation (CCF).
