Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

Prep-kc focuses on providing students from urban school districts with opportunities to succeed in college and their careers. By working with urban school districts, prep-kc supports at-scale improvements in outcomes for underserved students, most of whom are first-generation college-goers. Prep-kc invests in research-based strategies that will prepare students for careers in high-demand, high-salary jobs in the kansas city region. Prep-kc partners with six urban school districts and four charter schools on both sides of the state line. Together, these districts serve over 69,000 students. 79% of these students identify as students of color, and 84% qualify for free and reduced lunch, which reflects a disproportionate number of students of color and students growing up in low-income households across the 9-county metropolitan region. While prep-kc's students represented only 16% of the high school graduates from the 9-county region's class of 2017, they are 34% of the region's graduates of color and 48% of the region's high school graduates from low-income households. By providing students from these urban schools with opportunities to prepare for post-secondary education and meaningful careers, prep-kc's work provides a path to economic opportunity and expands and diversifies the kansas city region's homegrown talent pipeline.

IRS990/Desc0SEE SCHEDULE OSINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 2006, PREP-KC HAS BEEN DEVELOPING AND PILOTING STRATEGIES TO HELP STUDENTS IN URBAN HIGH SCHOOLS GO BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND DEVELOP CONCRETE EVIDENCE OF THEIR READINESS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREER. AS WE GAINED EXPERIENCE AND TRACKED DATA IMPACT, PREP-KC COINED THE TERM "MARKET VALUE ASSETS" TO DESCRIBE THESE RIGOROUS EXPERIENCES THAT ALIGN STUDENTS' HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION WITH THE EXPECTATIONS OF POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTIONS AND THE 21ST-CENTURY WORKFORCE.MVAS ARE THOSE ASSETS HAVE TANGIBLE, EVIDENCE-BASED VALUE TO STUDENTS' PROSPECTS FOR POSTSECONDARY ACCESS AND ATTAINMENT, AND SUCCESS IN ENTERING HIGH-GROWTH, HIGH-DEMAND CAREER PATHWAYS. PREP-KC NOW INVESTS IN AND MEASURES THE FOLLOWING FOUR MVAS: 1. AT LEAST NINE COLLEGE CREDITS EARNED DURING HIGH SCHOOL; 2. AN INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CREDENTIAL EARNED DURING HIGH SCHOOL; 3. COMPLETION OF A RIGOROUS INTERNSHIP OR CLIENT PROJECT DURING HIGH SCHOOL; OR 4. RECEIVING A KC SCHOLARS OR HONEYWELL HOPE SCHOLARSHIP (THESE FULL SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED DURING THE JUNIOR YEAR AND PROVIDE INTENSIVE SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS DURING THE POSTSECONDARY APPLICATION, ADMISSIONS, AND TRANSITION PROCESSES.)MARKET VALUE ASSETS CAN BENEFIT EVERY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE IN THE REGION AS WELL AS THE REGIONAL WORKFORCE. HOWEVER, MARKET VALUE ASSETS MAY HAVE THE MOST PROFOUND IMPACT ON STUDENTS WHO GROW UP IN LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS. NUMEROUS RESEARCH SOURCES AS WELL AS PREP-KC'S EXPERIENCE HELPING STUDENTS FROM URBAN SCHOOLS - MANY OF WHOM ARE THE FIRST IN THEIR FAMILIES TO COMPLETE ANY POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION OR TRAINING - DEMONSTRATE THAT THESE MARKET VALUE ASSETS CAN CHANGE A STUDENTS' TRAJECTORY DURING AND AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND PROVIDE A POWERFUL SPRINGBOARD FOR ECONOMIC MOBILITY. BECAUSE PREP-KC'S PARTNER HIGH SCHOOLS SERVE 48% OF ALL STUDENTS GROWING UP IN LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS IN THE BI-STATE 9-COUNTY METROPOLITAN AREA, PREP-KC HAS THE OPPORTUNITY NOT ONLY TO CHANGE THE TRAJECTORY OF INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS' LIVES, BUT TO HELP MAKE SIGNIFICANT INROADS TOWARDS ECONOMIC MOBILITY AND "INCLUSIVE PROSPERITY" ACROSS THE ENTIRE KANSAS CITY REGION. DURING THE SUMMER OF 2019, PREP-KC PROVIDED 57 STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO COMPLETE INTERNSHIPS ACROSS THE CITY, AND 142 IMMERSIVE SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PREP-KC STUDENTS IN HEALTH CAREERS, BIOSCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, BUSINESS AND FINANCE. AS THE REGION'S FIRST ORGANIZATION TO FOCUS OUR WORK ON HELPING STUDENTS ATTAIN MVAS, PREP-KC IS EXCITED THAT KC RISING AND THE EWING MARION KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION'S REAL-WORLD LEARNING INITIATIVE HAVE ADOPTED AND AFFIRMED THE CONCEPT OF MARKET VALUE ASSETS ACROSS THE BI-STATE KANSAS CITY REGION. OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS, PREP-KC IS POSITIONED TO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE AS A SOURCE OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND STRATEGIC CONSULTATION IN THESE REGIONAL EFFORTS.AS PART OF OUR ONGOING EFFORTS TO ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT HAS A STRONG ACADEMIC FOUNDATION, PREP-KC WILL CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN OUR K-3 LITERACY BENCHMARKING WORK ACROSS AN ESTIMATED 235 CLASSROOMS THAT WILL SERVE AT LEAST 4,000 STUDENTS NEXT YEAR. K-3 LITERACY BENCHMARKING HAS ALREADY DELIVERED PROMISING EARLY RESULTS DURING THE FIRST PHASE OF THE INITIATIVE. OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS, PREP-KC PARTNER SCHOOLS IMPLEMENTING PREP-KC'S K-3 LITERACY BENCHMARKING INITIATIVE CUT THE PROFICIENCY GAP IN 3RD-GRADE READING SCORES IN HALF. IN 2014, THESE DISTRICTS FACED A 22-POINT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR 3RD-GRADE READING SCORES AND STATEWIDE RESULTS ACROSS MISSOURI. BY 2018, THAT GAP HAD NARROWED BY HALF TO AN 11-POINT GAP.PREP-KC HAS SPENT 13 YEARS BUILDING A ROBUST AND DIVERSE NETWORK OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE COMMITTED TO VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME, ENERGY, AND EXPERTISE TO HELP STUDENTS ATTENDING PREP-KC'S PARTNER SCHOOLS PREPARE FOR COLLEGE AND CAREER SUCCESS. DURING THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR, PREP-KC ENGAGED 872 INDUSTRY VOLUNTEERS WHO REACHED 8,554 STUDENTS THROUGH FACE-TO-FACE CAREER EXPLORATION
