IRS990/Desc0SEE SCHEDULE OPREP-KC -- WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND THEIR INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS -- FOCUSES RESOURCES (TIME, FUNDING, AND PEOPLE) ON DEVELOPING CAPACITY INSIDE THESE DISTRICTS. THIS INCLUDES PROVIDING COACHING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS AND SCHOOL/DISTRICT LEADERS IN ORDER TO IMPLEMENT MORE EFFECTIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES, AND ALSO TO CREATE NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERS AND BUSINESS LEADERS, FOCUSED ON COLLEGE AND CAREER PREPARATION. WE ARE GUIDED BY THE BELIEF THAT THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION FOR KANSAS CITY'S URBAN YOUTH WILL HAVE A POWERFUL AND LASTING EFFECT NOT ONLY ON STUDENTS' LIVES, BUT ALSO ON THE QUALITY OF ECONOMIC AND CIVIC LIFE THROUGHOUT OUR REGION.PREP-KC IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO TAKE ON THIS WORK SUCCESSFULLY BECAUSE: 1) WE HAVE LONG-TERM, HIGH-TRUST, EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE DISTRICT LEADERSHIP TEAMS, SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAMS, AND TEACHERS IN OUR PARTNER-DISTRICTS, 2) WE HAVE A PROVEN SET OF STRATEGIES THAT ARE IMPROVING ACADEMIC OUTCOMES FOR URBAN STUDENTS, AND 3) WE HAVE A WEB-BASED DATA DASHBOARD TO MEASURE PROGRESS AND GUIDE IMPLEMENTATION.THE PREP-KC TEAM IS UNIQUELY SKILLED AT COLLABORATING WITH EDUCATORS TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES. ADDITIONALLY, THE PREP-KC TEAM IS EXPERT IN USING DATA TO GUIDE IMPLEMENTATION AND CREATE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR RESOURCES.PREP-KC WAS FOUNDED IN 2005 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CIVIC COUNCIL OF GREATER KANSAS CITY AND THE GREATER KANSAS CITY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AS A REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL INTERMEDIARY TO FOCUS RESOURCES ON IMPROVING COLLEGE AND CAREER PREPARATION FOR THE BI-STATE REGION'S URBAN STUDENTS. SINCE OUR FOUNDING, PREP-KC HAS DEVELOPED HIGH-TRUST RELATIONSHIPS WITH KANSAS CITY'S SIX URBAN SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHICH COLLECTIVELY SERVE NEARLY HALF OF THE 5-COUNTY REGION'S LOW-INCOME STUDENTS AND STUDENTS-OF-COLOR, AND A GROWING NUMBER OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS. EVIDENCE OF OUR SUCCESS INCLUDES IMPROVEMENTS IN ACADEMIC OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS SERVED BY OUR SIX PARTNER SCHOOL DISTRICTS (AS MEASURED BY A WEB-BASED DATA DASHBOARD DEVELOPED BY PREP-KC AS A KEY ACCOUNTABILITY TOOL). FOCUS AREASMATH BENCHMARKINGPREP-KC WORKS WITH MATH DEPARTMENTS, OFTEN IN GRADES 2-12, TO EQUIP TEACHERS WITH THE NECESSARY SUPPORTS TO RAISE THE RIGOR OF ALL MATH CLASSES TO PREPARE ALL STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS IN ADVANCED MATH CLASSES. MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, ADVANCED MATH IS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND IN HIGH-GROWTH CAREERS IN THE KANSAS CITY REGION. STUDIES SHOW THAT WHEN STUDENTS EXPERIENCE SUCCESS IN MATH, THEIR CONFIDENCE ALSO IMPROVES IN OTHER SUBJECTS.WORKFORCE PREPARATIONPREP-KC HAS CREATED SIX NEW CAREER ACADEMIES IN HIGH-GROWTH FIELDS SUCH AS BIOTECHNOLOGY, BUSINESS/FINANCE, AND ENGINEERING. THESE ACADEMIES GIVE STUDENTS EARLY BUSINESS EXPERIENCES AND INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE. THESE BUSINESS/INDUSTRY-BASED EXPERIENCES HELP STUDENTS WHO MIGHT NOT OTHERWISE HAVE THESE OPPORTUNITIES, DEVELOP ASPIRATIONS FOR THEIR FUTURES, HELPING THEM TO DEVELOP CONCRETE PLANS FOR POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION AND ULTIMATELY, EMPLOYMENT.EARLY COLLEGE OPPORTUNITIESBY WORKING WITH URBAN HIGH SCHOOLS AND AREA HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS, PREP-KC IS ESTABLISHING MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO TAKE COLLEGE COURSES WHILE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL. THIS IS ESPECIALLY CRITICAL FOR FIRST-GENERATION HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES AND FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE APPLICANTS. STUDIES SHOW THAT STUDENTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE COLLEGE COURSES BEFORE THE END OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION ARE MORE LIKELY TO COMPLETE POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION. IN ADDITION, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS CAN REDUCE THE COST OF POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION BY COMPLETING SOME COURSES WHILE ATTENDING HIGH SCHOOL.
