Worked with community group Kupa Aina o Kuliouou on the purchase of approximately 4 acres of land in the back of Kuliouou they want to protect. Financial Statement Notes

Part II, Line 9: Organization Reporting of conservation easements.

In 2017 the Hui received a security deposit to be held in perpetuity for any potential litigation or enforcement violations that the Hui may need to pay should the property owner not comply with the easement agreement. Expenses for monitoring the easement in 2023 were approximately $450 and included review of correspondence, newsletters, public minutes, site visits, reporting, phone calls, emails, social media review and internal Hui Board discussions. A third party was engaged to perform this service, and the expense is recorded as part of outside services and printing.On February 14, 2014, the Hui granted a conservation easement to the City and County of Honolulu for its property known as Hawea heiau complex and Keawawa wetland. The agreement includes certain prohibitions and restrictions (unless an exception is expressly provided) as follows: Certain activities normally allowed on Preservation-2 land, e.g., game preserves, recreation facilities, etc.); Subdivision of the land; Dwellings; Commercial activities; Entrance fees; and Uses and activities inconsistent with the purpose of the easement.On March 31, 2017, the Hui granted an easement to The Trust for Public Land, a California nonprofit corporation, and the City and County of Honolulu for its property known as Ka Iwi Coast Mauka Lands. The agreement requires development of a management plan to include a baseline report, survey of terrestrial flora and fauna, an archaeological, cultural and historic survey and environmental site assessment.Community access is to be accommodated four days per year.Certain prohibitions and restrictions (unless an exception is expressly provided) are as follows: Subdividing the land;* Dwelling units;* Commercial activities;* Charge fees for entrance; * Agriculture activities;* Recreational activities, e.g., golf;* Up-zoning; or* Mineral extraction.Annual reports as well as a 10-year review are also required.

Kaiwi Explorations 2023 hosted 185 residents on educated hikes about the cultural and natural significance of the area. This free community event runs for two days with support from partners The Trust for Public Land, Sierra Club Oahu Group, Maunalua.Net, Kamehameha Schools, State of Hawaii Dept. of Parks & Rec., Hui Nalu and Hawaii Trail and Mountain Club. Completed a flora and fauna report. Opened the lands to UH Manoa archeological professor and students to do field work. Kaiwi mauka trail maintenance and self-managed walk /hike pilot programs extended through the year to assist the public with outdoor opportunities.
