“Our 6th annual integrative health and resilience conference was held march 2017, in partnership with the university of utah health promotion and education department. We hosted 175 participants and offered 20 scholarships to health care professionals working for charitable organizations, who otherwise could not afford to attend this conference. These organizations included volunteers of america, the road home, maliheh free clinic, national alliance on mental illness, utah army national guard resiliency project, family counseling center, ms society, ronald mcdonald house, easter seals/goodwill among others. We also helped defray the travel costs for keynote speaker, yotam heineberg ph. D, who serves on the faculty of stanford university. His presentation was, "compassion, resilience and teamwork in healthcare settings." this presentation, along with other keynote presentations, is archived and available for free to the public through the j.w. Marriott library. 2. In january 2017, we launched resilience training for ex-offenders in partnership with the utah correction department, provo training and resource learning center. Our goal is to help former felons released on probation or parole as they transition from prison, to productive, meaningful, law-abiding lives. In january 2017, we started the classes with men and throughout the year offered two evening classes weekly. In 2017 we conducted 120 classes for a total of 94 participants. We also recruited 2 peer mentors, who were invited to be guest speakers. These peer mentors, also former felons, graduated early in the year and serve as important, credible role models for our participants. In august this year, we launched our resilience training for women, who are also former felons and most of whom are mothers. The most significant measure of success was that of the 61 graduates (those completing 8 or more classes of the 12-session series,) none to date have returned to prison or jail. Recidivism is very common among ex-offenders. We are determined to do everything we can to give ex-offenders a second chance at building a life without crime. Through our training team of al and lenise zylstra, who have an extensive background in working with at- risk families, we offer genuine personal caring, evidence-based instruction and require personal accountability from participants. They submit regular self-evaluations on a range of changes in mindset and behaviors. These are uniformly high---especially surprising from participants who typically dropped out of or eschew education in high school. Most of our participants committed drug-related crimes and are in recovery for substance addiction.”
