Activity 2

Pass-through charitable services - the foundation manages several pass-through funds. Allowable funding areas are the same as listed above for permanent funds. The greatest pass-through activity in 2011 was through the educational improvement tax credit program of the pennsylvania department of community & economic development. In compliance with state requirements, grants are awarded for innovative educational programs at k-12 public schools. Scholarships are awarded to income-eligible families for students to attend non-public k-12 schools, and to income-eligible families for students to attend pre-approved preschool programs. In 2011, 19 grants totaling $244,380, were awarded to area charities from pass-through funds. Also in 2011, 176 educational scholarships totaling $74,810, were awarded to qualifying students from pass-through funds.

Activity 3

Other charitable services - at its own expense, the foundation annually hosts a scholarship awards dinner to provide the opportunity for donors of permanent scholarship funds to meet and interact with student recipients. The foundation provides individual technical assistance to area charities regarding management, fundraising, marketing, and other areas impacting non-profits. The foundation also provides individual assistance and research services to donors regarding area non-profits. No fees are charged for these services. The foundation also partners with other philanthropic organizations to host various educational programs for non-profits, with registration fees kept at a minimum to encourage participation. Periodically, the foundation assembles and distributes care packages to area charities which provide services to disadvantaged women. And finally, the foundation serves as a convener of community issues and serves as a philanthropic reference for the community. Once again, little or no fees are charged for these services. In 2011, the foundation led an effort to promote charities offering programs in the arts and humanities by producing, at no charge to the participating charities, the art of giving video which featured five local charities. Each of the five charities was given their own video segment for their individual promotional use. The estimated value of the video is in excess of $25,000.
