Mission

To sponsor and encourage research, publications, and forums for the furtherance of justice under the law; to establish scholarships for law related education; to preserve historical structures and the history of the legal community; to support legal aid to the indigent; and to promote diversity in the legal community.

Major Activities

Activity 2
1. THE TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL PROGRAM INVOLVES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN LAW FOCUSED EDUCATION. LAWYERS AND JUDGES VOLUNTEER TO OBSERVE AND EVALUATE THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION AND THE STATE HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION WHICH IS HELD BY THE DALLAS BAR ASSOCIATION. WINNERS IN THE STATE COMPETITION THEN COMPETE AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL. EACH YEAR 150 TEAMS COMPETE IN THE STATE COMPETITION AND FOR THE PAST 32 YEARS, OVER 108,000 STUDENTS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE MOCK TRIAL EXPERIENCE. 2. CASA, COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES, DEPENDS UPON QUALIFIED VOLUNTEERS TO ACT ON CHILDREN'S BEHALF IN THE COURTROOM AND AT MEDIATION. CASA RECEIVED A GRANT AWARD TO OFFSET THE COSTS OF CONDUCTING BACKGROUND CHECKS ON PROSPECTIVE VOLUNTEERS. 3. Mosaic Family Services was awarded a grant to cover litigation expenses of the multi-cultural legal program clients for transcripts, dispute mediation services, mental health evaluations and social studies. 4. Ignite of Texas received a grant to support their after school civic program for girls in local high schools. The grant was provided for the Day at the Capital which was conducted in partnership with the YMCA Youth and Government program. The students were able to learn about the legislative process in Austin, Texas and meet with elected officials. 5. The Dallas Bar Association Diversity Summit received a grant to hold the first ever diversity summit to address the state of diversity on the legal profession in Dallas and discuss models for recruiting and retaining attorneys of color. The American Bar Association awarded the summit leaders the Partnership Award for 2012 for their efforts. 6. Dispute Mediation Services received a grant to provide fragile families with resources to co-parent their child in a healthy and productive way. The project provides a minimum of 4 co-parenting skills building and education programs, case management contact, and parent mediation sessions. 7. The Texas Judicial Foundation received a grant to support a seminar for judges on the topic of how a litigant's immigration/citizenship status affects the disposition of family, civi, and criminal law proceedings in state court as opposed to federal court. 8. The University of North Texas was awarded a grant to provide scholarships to students to attend a three week intensive study abroad at the International Criminal Court and Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The students have achieved academic success and are prospective law students. 9. The Conference on Crimes Against Women received a grant for their nationally recognized conference. The grant will allow prosecutors from the Dallas County District Attorney's office to attend. 10. THE DALLAS URBAN DEBATE ALLIANCE RECEIVED A GRANT TO PROVIDE SUMMER PROGRAMMING TO DISD STUDENTS WHO OTHERWISE WOULD NOT HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ADDITIONAL DEBATE TRAINING THAT IS AVAIABLE TO PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTS. DEBATE IS SEEN AS PROVIDING A PIPELINE OF DIVERSE STUDENTS TO THE LEGAL PROFESSION. WHEN STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN DEBATE AND ARE MENTORED BY ATTORNEYS, THEY CAN ENVISION A LEGAL CAREER FOR THEMSELVES. 11. THE APPEALING TO THE PUBLIC PROGRAM WAS OFFERED TO OVER 500 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN DALLAS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT. THE STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO ATTEND THE ACTUAL COURT PROCEEDINGS OF A CASE BEING ARGUED BEFORE THE FIFTH DISTRICT COURT OF APPEALS. STUDENTS ARE BRIEFED BY AN ATTORNEY BEFORE THE CASE STARTS SO THEY HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE APPELLATE PROCESS OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM. AFTER THE CASE IS HEARD AND THE COURT IS DISMISSED, STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO ASK QUESTIONS OF THE ATTONEYS PRESENTING THE CASE. STUDENTS ARE THEN INVITED TO SHARE HOW THEY WOULD DECIDE THE APPEAL. 12. LAW DAY IS OBSERVED IN MAY AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS ARE HELD IN THE DALLAS INDPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT AS A RESULT OF THE GRANT AWARD. ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SUBMIT ESSAYS, ARTWORK, AND PHOTOGRAPHY THAT EXEMPLIFIES THE THEME OF LAW

HUGHES DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS TO OUTSTANDING MINORITY STUDENTS, ENTERING LAW SCHOOL AT SMU, WHO PLAN TO REMAIN IN DALLAS UPON GRADUATION. THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS TO INCREASE THE DIVERSITY OF OUR LEGAL COMMUNITY. THERE ARE 5 HUGHES SCHOLARS IN LAW SCHOOL INCLUDED IN THE OVERALL TOTAL OF 47 HUGHES SCHOLARS. STUDENTS MUST MAINTAIN A SATISFACTORY GPA IN SCHOOL. 2. COLLINS CLERKSHIPS: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES A SIX WEEK SUMMER CLERKSHIP TO MINORITY LAW STUDENTS AT THE SUPREME COURT OF TEXAS, THE 5TH DISTRICT COURT OF APPEALS, THE 14TH AND 68TH CIVIL DISTRICT COURTS, THE CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, AND THE PUBLIC DEFENDER'S OFFICE. THE STUDENTS ARE ABLe TO ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP WITH A MENTOR, GAIN EXPOSURE TO WORK EXPERIENCES THAT WILL ADD VALUE TO THEIR JOB PROSPECTS AND BE EXPOSED TO POTENTIAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES. 3. DONALD C. MCCLEARY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO A 2L STUDENT WHO EXEMPLIFIES LEADERSHIP QUALITIES, ABILITY TO EMBRACE A DIVERSITY OF IDEAS AND A WILLINGNESS TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. 4. JUSTICE JAMES A. BAKER CLERKSHIP: PROVIDES A SECOND YEAR LAW STUDENT (2L) WITH A 6 WEEK SUMMER CLERKSHIP WITH THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF TEXAS. THE STUDENT IS EXPOSED TO THE APPELLATE PROCESS OF OUR LEGAL SYSTEM AND PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO AN EXCEPTIONAL LAW STUDENT WHO HAS DEMONSTRATED EXCELLENT WRITING SKILLS AND LEADERSHIP QUALITIES. 5. STEPHEN PHILBIN AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN LEGAL REPORTING: RECOGNITION OF JOURNALISTS' WORK DEMONSTRATING EXCELLENCE IN LEGAL REPORTING. CASH AWARDS AND RECOGNITION PLAQUES ARE AWARDED IN EIGHT DIFFERENT CATEGORIES INCLUDING PRINT, TELEVISION, RADIO, AND INTERNET REPORTING.
