The audit firm presents the audit and 990 to members of the finance committee. The finance committee reviews the information and asks questions or requests clarification from the audit firm. Once accepted by the finance committee, a copy of the audit and 990 are scanned to the wvs secure website for board members to review prior to the next board meeting. Hard copies of the audit and 990 are also available to board members. At the board meeting, the finance committee reviews the highlights from their meeting with the auditor. Once all questions or concerns are addressed, the board votes to file the mn charitable organization form and related 990 and to accept the independent auditors report.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

With dedicated volunteers and partners, we help people address life's challenges in a respectful and dignified manner. We do this through coordinated assistance, food programs, home delivered meals, special projects, nutrition education and the clothes shops.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The supplemental food shelf 330 households received food from winona volunteer services for the first time and 64 different households received "groceries on the go," a new delivery service for the homebound. Thanks to 4,328 volunteer hours, 524,630 pounds of food were distributed throughout the year, serving 3,128 different individuals with food. Food recipients included 60% adults, 25% children, and 15% seniors. 52% of the food came from food bank purchases, 29% from community donations, 10% from wal-mart, 6% from other purchases, 2% from target, and 1% from kwik trip. All in all, we received or procured 495,964 lbs pounds of food. Eligibility for the food shelf increased from a limit of 200% to 300%, allowing a household of four to declare earnings of up to 78,600 a year. We coordinated 6 coronavirus food assistance food drops giving 88,319 additional pounds of food to individuals & families. The food for thought program during the 2019/2020 school year, our food for thought program provided 397 elementary kids with 7,850 pounds of easy-to-eat foods. Nutrition assistance program for seniors (naps) 449 federally-funded nutrition assistance program for seniors boxes of food were handed out to qualifying seniors anytime the food shelf was open. This change occurred to encourage more seniors to stop in and pick up their food boxes when they visited the food shelf.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

The clothes shop despite being closed for almost 2 1/2 months due to covid-19, clothes shop volunteers donated almost 3,900 hours and rang up 8,102 transactions totaling over 76,144 in sales to support our operations. We received over 7,000 bags and boxes of clothing donations. Holiday projects 13 volunteers delivered 223 meals to winona residents on easter sunday and lions club volunteers packed 450 christmas bags filled with a ham and fresh produce which were distributed to our food shelf clients a week before christmas.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

In accordance with professional standards, the organization follows the statutory requirements for their income tax accounting and generally avoids risks associated with potentially problematic tax positions that may be challenged upon examination. Management believes any liability resulting from taxing authorities imposing additional income taxes from activities deemed to be unrelated to the organizations tax-exempt status would not have a material effect on the accompanying financial statements.
