Summerbridge san francisco is a tuition-free academic enrichment and advocacy program for approximately 120 motivated but underserved middle school students from inner-city public and parochial schools. The program includes a six week long full-time summer academic program and regular school year tutoring, academic support and enrichment programs. During the summer, students take classes in math, writing, social studies, languages, science, public speaking, health and environmental education, as well as electives in the arts and athletics. The school year program features enrichment courses in math and english, after school tutoring, high school counseling and secondary school admission test (ssat) preparation. Approximately 95% of summerbridge students subsequently enroll in academically rigorous college preparatory high schools (university high school and others) and about 90% go on to four year colleges. Summerbridge also embraces a "students teaching students" philosophy. Many of the summer courses are taught by enthusiastic high school and college students from the bay area and across the country. Mentored by a cadre of experienced professional teachers, these high school and college students are involved in almost every aspect of the summer program as teachers, teacher assistants, and in the planning and conducting of activities, events and field trips. 72% of summerbridge student teachers have gone on to work or volunteer in schools or other education oriented organizations.program expense is direct expenses only; we do not allocate occupancy or other indirect overhead to this program.revenues are donations and investment earnings specifically restricted to this program.
