“For nearly 50 years, canterbury voices' mission has been to transform lives, educate the future, and inspire communities through great choral music. Canterbury was established in may of 1969 by myles criss and 60 volunteer singers. Criss' goal was to establish a premier classical chorus in the oklahoma city community. Today, canterbury has 135 volunteer adult chorus members and is the premier chorus in the state of oklahoma. The group has performed for the governor's inauguration, oklahoma's centennial celebration, and even on barry manilow's recent concert tour to oklahoma city. Canterbury partners with various arts organizations in the greater metro area, including the oklahoma city philharmonic, oklahoma city ballet, and lyric theatre of oklahoma. Canterbury voices' choral programming includes three concerts per fiscal year, which are split between two "concert seasons." in the spring of 2017, canterbury performed a double chorus masterwork in partnership with the oklahoma city philharmonic and two student choirs from oklahoma city university. Handel's "israel in egypt" sold nearly 1,000 tickets at the civic center music hall. The fall concert in 2017 featured carol barnett's "a world beloved: a bluegrass mass" in canterbury's "bluegrass and bluejeans" concert at oklahoma city community college. Joined by kyle dillingham and horseshoe road featuring lucas ross and mattt denman, canterbury sold out the venue. The band accompanied the chorus during the mass, and also played an instrumental set of gospel, pop and folk songs. The final concert of 2017 was handel's "messiah". Canterbury performed a 1959 arrangement orchestrated by eugene goossens that requires a larger orchestra than the original orchestration by handel. The concert sold more than 2,300 tickets at the civic center music hall. The canterbury youth voices (cyv) is a premier children's chorus in the oklahoma city metropolitan area, providing children in grades 2-12 an advanced choral music education for 20 years. Cyv is the most affordable youth chorus in central oklahoma, with a tuition price of 225. It is canterbury's goal to reach more families and children of all ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds who love to sing, by providing need-based scholarships and opportunities to perform in the greater oklahoma city community and beyond. Twenty full and partial scholarships were awarded in 2017. Cyv has gained further recognition by performing at ice cube's big 3 on 3 basketball tournament in tulsa, performing at the upcoming oklahoma music educators association convention as an honor choir, and was recently invited to sing a feature concert in normandy, france for official d-day commemoration ceremonies.”
