Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To preserve, restore and interpret as a historic site and museum the Proprietary House (a NJ State-owned property) which was built in 1762-64 and served as colonial New Jersey's royal governor's mansion. Tours, educational programs and history-related activities are offered to the public. A collection of historical documents, artifacts, artwork, antique furniture and other collectible items is maintained. Since 2019, a State of NJ DCA Legislative Grant has funded major restoration of the Proprietary House structure, with work being overseen by Proprietary House Association on behalf of the State of New Jersey.

Tours of the museum, educational programs and history-related activities and events are offered to the public.

Proprietary House Association has a membership of approximately 110 individual members, who pay annual dues and are encouraged to volunteer and/or otherwise participate in the Association's various history-themed activities and events.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

A Board of Trustees is the governing body of Proprietary House Association, with Trustees elected for terms of three years each by the members of the Association. Officers (President, 1st VP, 2nd VP, Secretary and Treasurer) are nominated from the Board of Trustees and are elected annually by Association members. All trustees and officers are volunteers. There are no paid executives or staff.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7B

Authority for administrative responsibilities is delegated by the Board of Trustees to an Executive Committee, comprised of the officers and two other member-elected representative trustees. The Board of Trustees and Executive Committee usually meet regularly, with the 2020 meeting schedule having been disrupted by the COVID-19 Pandemic and related restrictions. Responsibilities are also delegated to a number of functional Trustee Committees, which include: fundraising; publicity; membership; cleaning; museum gift shop; colonial tea room.

Executive Committee meetings are usually documented with written minutes, as are certain functional committee meetings/activities, such as fundraising. Although the need for documentation is not applicable to many functional committees (such as cleaning, etc.) all functional committee activities are regularly reported on and discussed at the documented meetings of the Board of Trustees, with those discussions of committee activities incorporated into the written minutes of the Board of Trustees.

Form 990 reporting is based on monthly, quarterly and year-end 2020 financial statements that were reviewed and approved by the Board of Trustees. The Association's Year-end 2020 financial accounts also were subject to audit. The Form 990 will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees immediately after its submission and, should that review require any changes in reporting, an amended Form 990 will be filed.

Proprietary House Association's governing documents and policies are available to the public upon request at the organization's museum office at Proprietary House. IRS990/MissionDesc0To preserve, restore and interpret as a historic site and museum the Proprietary House (a NJ State-owned property) which was built in 1762-64 and served as colonial New Jersey's royal governor's mansion. Tours, educational programs and history-related activities are offered to the public. A collection of historical documents, artifacts, artwork, antique furniture and other collectible items is maintained. Since 2019, a State of NJ DCA Legislative Grant has funded major restoration of the Proprietary House structure, with work being overseen by Proprietary House Association on behalf of the State of New Jersey.
