Mission

The Children's Eye Foundation was established in 1970. Our mission, to eliminate preventable blindness in children, is accomplished through programs that support pediatric ophthalmology research and training, and promote the highest quality eye care for children through public education and service.

Our mission is to end preventable blindness in children. CEF supports research, physician and patient education, and public awareness so every child can See More for life. No child should have their sight impaired when early detection and treatment makes vision loss preventable. That is why we work hand in hand with the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). With over 1,600 pediatric ophthalmologists, AAPOS is dedicated to ensuring the highest quality medical and surgical eye care worldwide for children and for adults with strabismus.

Screen Eyes Early (SEE)An Amblyopia Prevention ProgramAmblyopia (lazy eye) is the #1 cause of vision loss in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends every child's eyes be screened routinely starting at age 12 months, to catch or prevent vision loss in time. CEF's Screen Eyes Early (SEE) campaign educates parents, pediatricians, primary care physicians, school nurses & educators about vision screening standards and tools that make it possible to identify silent disease early in life when treatment outcomes are best. No child with a vision problem should get missed. Through education and awareness, we can save sight in many thousands of children with preventable or correctable vision problems.$24,117-
Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Hall of FameHonoring Distinguished Achievements and ServiceCEF recognizes distinguished achievements in order to honor service and preserve stories, as well as to educate and inspire the next generation. In biographical sketches and portraits on display in this traveling and online exhibit, visitors get a glimpse of the legacies of extraordinary people who devoted their lives to improving vision care for children, so that children could have a life with good sight. Read about magnificent scientific discoveries in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. Learn about marvelous teachers, innovators, surgeons, clinicians and humanitarians that have opened doors to better care of children's eye and vision health and of adults with strabismus. The Hall of Fame gallery is organized according to distinguished achievement awards, including the Marshall M. Parks MD Medal (annually awarded by CEF) as well as the Frank D. Marilyn Miller, MD International Travel GrantsThis program supports the training of pediatric eye care specialists and makes eye care services more available in under served regions worldwide. These grants are given to international pediatric ophthalmologists who do not otherwise have the means to attend the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) Annual Scientific Conference, where they have the opportunity to learn about the latest innovations in procedures and technology, and engage with other pediatric ophthalmologists about what they are doing in their practices. Recipients return to their home countries with new skills, knowledge, and relationships that benefit their patients and allow them to train others and improve care.$20,382-
