The grand haven area community foundation, governed by a volunteer board of trustees, is dedicated to improving and enhancing the quality of life in ottawa county and the western michigan area by serving as a leader, catalyst and resource for philanthropy; building and holding a permanent and growing endowment for the community's changing needs and opportunities without discrimination as to race, color, or creed; striving for community improvement through strategic grantmaking in such fields as the arts, education, health, the environment, youth, social services and other human needs; promoting partnerships around critical community issues and leveraging resources to meet community needs; providing a flexible and cost-effective way for donors to achieve their charitable goals and to improve their community now and in the future. Adopted by board of trustees july 27, 2005.
The foundation receives gifts, bequests, and donations to be held in trust and administered exclusively for charitable purposes, primarily in and for, but not limited to, the benefit of the people of ottawa county and the western michigan area.

Consequently, the foundation is exempt from federal income tax and certain excise taxes imposed on private foundations. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the foundation and recognize a tax liability if the foundation has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by the irs or other applicable taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the foundation and has concluded that as of december 31, 2015 and 2014, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability or disclosure in the combined financial statements.”
