Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of slide ranch is to connect children to nature. Slide ranch cultivates healthy bodies and minds and fosters future generations of environmental stewards. By farming, cooking, caring for animals and exploring coastal wilderness, slide ranch teaches people of all ages to see the connection between their own health, a healthy food system and a healthy environment. Slide ranch is situated on 134 acres of undeveloped coastline, and offers an ideal outdoor classroom for teaching about sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. Through hands-on environmental education programs, children and adults explore numerous coastal trails, tide-pools, pocket beaches, organic gardens, and farm areas that are home to goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and turkeys. Slide ranch serves youth from all backgrounds from throughout the san francisco bay area with a particular focus on disadvantaged, urban youth who otherwise have limited access to outdoor education experiences.

Founded in 1970, slide ranch is a non-profit educational farm and nature center located north of san francisco within the golden gate national recreation area (ggnra) and serves over 10,000 youth and adults annually from all over the san francisco bay area. By farming, cooking, caring for animals and exploring coastal wilderness, slide ranch teaches people of all ages to see the connection between their own health, a healthy food system and a healthy environment. Slide ranch offers school and community group programs, family programs, summer camp, a teacher-in-residence internship program for emerging teachers, stewardship opportunities for volunteers and opportunities for self-guided exploration.

Form 990 is prepared by an outside tax professional. The form is then reviewed by the organization's management and the finance committee of the board of directors. This group of individuals then discusses the contents of the return with the outside tax professional. After a full review (with modifications where necessary), the final version of the tax return is provided to all members of the organization's voting body on their request. The executive director signs the efile authorization to send the return to the department of the treasury.

The board of directors reviews all potential conflicts of interest at least annually. All personnel and board members are required to disclose potential conflicts and any related party affiliations. The organization seeks full transparency on all relationships. Any potential conflicts (in fact or appearance) are discussed openly and resolved in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.
