Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Vfes offers a continuum of educational, summer and employment-related programs for children and adults with disabilities. The hallmark of vfes programming is its collaborative and holistic approach to each child, adolescent and adult, recognizing his or her unique abilities and needs. The organization is committed to helping students and participants develop a strong sense of self-worth, discover their talents, reach their goals and plan for their futures. Vfes continues to focus on its mission of preparing children and adults with special needs to realize their potential as contributing members of the community.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The luma center is a program of valley forge educational services that provides therapeutic and educational support to children ages 2-16 years at a center based location on the vfes campus. In 2012-13 the luma center for development and learning provided services to over 50 families. The luma center provides onsite therapeutic group and individual sessions to support children with developmental delays, speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, sensory processing disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, difficulties in the area of executive functions, social behavior, play and self-help skills. During the summer the luma center provided therapeutic services to over 25 children. The luma center professional staff continues to receive advanced training in the evaluation and treatment of children with apraxia of speech. The luma center provided specialized evaluations, individual and group speech therapy, parent education and coaching for children and families with this rare disorder. The luma center shared their expertise on child development and learning with many professionals in preschool and private-school programs, providing professional learning sessions to over 180 teachers and support staff in the delaware valley.
Activity 3
Summer matters, a program of valley forge educational services, offers a continuum of innovative programming for learners with special needs, ages 5 - 21, in the suburbs of philadelphia, pennsylvania. In 2012/2013 summer matters offered summer voyagers, an innovative summer remedial/enrichment/recreation program for children ages 5-10 who struggle in school; extended school year at the vanguard school, a remedial program for classified students, ages 5-17, who qualify; the vanguard transition center summer experiences for students, ages 18-21, who qualify; and summer l.i.f.e., an experiential program for classified and non-classified students that uses experienced-based learning to reinforce social skills development. In 2012/2013 the summer voyagers program served 23 students over a six-week period. The esy program at the vanguard school and the vanguard transition center summer experience served a combined total of 183 students over a six-week period, 33 participated in our vanguard transition center summer experience. The summer l.i.f.e. Program served 99 students during a two month period. In addition to its summer programs, summer matters offered five respite programs for classified students, ages 10-21, including five weekend retreats providing youth and young adults to live away from their families and practice real live skills. The summer matters program also hosted the 5th annual special kids camp expo with over 100 families and professionals from southeastern pa learning about educational and recreational programs offered to youth and young adults with special needs. Forty plus vendors participated.

IN 2012-13, THE VANGUARD SCHOOL INTRODUCED THE SAXON MATH PROGRAM. THE CURRICULUM TASK FORCE EXAMINED ACADEMIC GOALS IN MATHEMATICS AND ASSESSMENTS. VANGUARD'S COMMITMENT TO EACH STUDENT'S INDIVIDUALITY AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT IS APPARENT IN OUR 13 GRADUATES THIS YEAR. THESE STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITIONED INTO THE WORK FORCE OR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION. THE VANGUARD TRANSITION CENTER PROVIDED 200 STUDENTS WITH WORK FORCE READINESS, EITHER THROUGH ON-CAMPUS WORK EXPERIENCE OR THROUGH OUR COMMUNITY-BASED WORK PROGRAM BY PARTNERING WITH BUSINESSES IN THE COMMUNITY. TEN STUDENTS ATTENDED VO-TECH PROGRAMS IN THEIR COUNTY AND EIGHT STUDENTS ATTENDED COLLEGE/COMMUNITY ON PART-TIME BASIS. THE VANGUARD SCHOOL PROVIDES ONSITE THERAPY SERVICES IN THE FORM OF SPEECH AND LANGUAGE, OCCUPATIONAL AND PHYSICAL THERAPY AS WELL AS NURSING SERVICES AND CLINICAL/SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES. ALL THERAPISTS ARE FULL TIME AND EACH PLAYS AN INTEGRAL ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CHILD'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. THE NEW CLASSROOM PROVIDES ON-SITE SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SERVICES WITHIN AN INTEGRATED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO ADDRESS THE UNIQUE LEARNING PROFILE OF THESE CHILDREN.COMMUNITY SERVICE REMAINED A CORE VALUE THROUGHOUT OUR SCHOOLS.
