“Form 990-part iii-line 1: organizations mission or most significant activities to provide long-term support to 1)basic and clinical research programs leading to a cure, 2)clinical centers of excellence for the care and treatment of patients with als, 3)support programs for patients and care-givers that optimize care and promote independence of the patient, and 4)programs that promote patient and physician eduction about the diagnosis, treatment and caring for the patient with als. The als hope foundation is working to -establish a team of talented and imaginative scientists who will work cooperatively to accelerate als research -provide these researchers with stable funding to ensure that als research continues uninterrupted -provide funding for innovative, groundbreaking research across the country where traditional funding sources are not forthcoming. Part iii, line 4a-first accomplishment:the als hope foundation continues to support the mda/als center of hope at drexel university college of medicine, philadelphia, pa. This clinic serves 110-125 people living with als at any given time and is actively involved in clinical research to better understand the disease, improve patient care and test promising therapeutics aimed at slowing or stopping the progressive neurodegeneration. Our support provides salary suppport for the staff of this mulitdisciplinary clinic. In addition the als hope foundation supported the northeast als consortum to design and coordinate new trials of potential therapeutics for als in research. The als hope foundation supported research projects in several departments at drexel med. Projects included identification of modifying gencs in murine mouse models of als, targeting ampa receptors with neuroprotective oligomers as therapeutics for als, neurapthology in mice expressing a very low copy number of the mutant human g93a s0d1 gene associated with lou gehrigs disease(als), maintenance of a colony of transgenic mice for als research, the als hope foundation also began to organize the philadelphia institute of neurodegenerative disorder (phind) and held research meetings. The research supported by the als hope foundation benefits all of more than 30,000 people in the united states, and 300,000 people worldwide, at the time who are living with als. Since more than half of the people diagnosed with als die with in 3 years, these numbers represent far more people than are tallied at this moment in time. In education the als hope foundation supported the international alliance of als/mnd associations and sponsored the alliend professionals forum at the international sympoosium on als/mnd. This forum trains clinic professionals on how to take the latest research and apply it to clinical care and improving live for people living with als/mnd. Typically 250-500 professionals have attended from around the globe.”
