The food trust, a nonprofit founded in philadelphia in 1992, strives to make healthy food available to all. The food trust is a regional and national leader in developing new strategies to prevent childhood obesity and other diet-related diseases through innovative programs to increase access to fresh food and provide nutrition education in underserved communities.
The food trust is a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food and information to make healthy decisions. Headquartered in philadelphia, the food trust works with neighborhoods, schools, grocers, farmers and policymakers in the city and across the country to develop a comprehensive approach to improved food access that combines nutrition education and greater availability of affordable, healthy food.

PARTICIPATING TEACHERS ALSO RECEIVED NUTRITION EDUCATION MATERIALS FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR STUDENTS, ALONG WITH LESSON PLANS TO HELP THEM INCORPORATE NUTRITION INTO THEIR CURRICULUM. THE AGENCY ALSO PROVIDED NUTRITION EDUCATION IN OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME SETTINGS, IN MORE THAN 15 SITES, INCLUDING RECREATION CENTERS AND YMCAS. IN ADDITION, THE FOOD TRUST PROVIDES NUTRITION EDUCATION FOR ADULTS IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES OF PHILADELPHIA, NORRISTOWN, CHESTER, ALLENTOWN, AND READING, PA, AS WELL AS CAMDEN, NJ. AS A PART OF THE HEART SMARTS PROGRAM, NINE PHILADELPHIA CORNER STORES OFFER FREE BLOOD PRESSURE AND HEART-RISK ASSESSMENT SCREENINGS, AS WELL AS COUNSELING AND REFERRALS, IN COLLABORATION WITH TWO MAJOR HOSPITALS. WITH THE PHILADELPHIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH, THE FOOD TRUST CONTINUED THE VOLUNTARY HEALTHY CORNER STORE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM, WHICH ENCOURAGES STORE OWNERS IN PHILADELPHIA TO EXPAND THEIR SELECTION AND MARKETING OF HEALTHY FOODS AND DISCOURAGE PROMOTION OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS. REGIONALLY, THE FOOD TRUST HAS EXPANDED ITS' HEALTHY CORNER STORE INITIATIVE IN PENNSYLVANIA, DELAWARE AND NEW JERSEY, WORKING WITH OVER 200 STORES ACROSS THE TRI-STATE AREA. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, THE FOOD TRUST TRAINED SIX PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS TO IMPLEMENT THE HEALTHY CORNER STORE INITIATIVE IN 121 STORES THROUGHOUT THE STATE. IN WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, TEN STORES HAVE BEEN RECRUITED, TRAINED, AND RECEIVED SHELVING TO SUPPORT THEM IN STOCK AND SELL HEALTHIER CHOICES, AND A SUBSET OF STORES HAVE RECEIVED IN-STORE NUTRITION EDUCATION. IN NEW JERSEY, THE AGENCY HAS DEVELOPED AND MANAGES A NETWORK OF 43 HEALTHY CORNER STORES IN CAMDEN, AND IS WORKING STATEWIDE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW JERSEY PARTNERSHIP FOR HEALTHY KIDS TO DEVELOP THE NEW JERSEY HEALTHY CORNER STORE NETWORK, WHICH HAS MORE THAN 140 PARTICIPATING STORES IN UNDERSERVED AREAS OF THE STATE. |
