Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The food trust, a nonprofit founded in philadelphia in 1992, strives to make healthy food available to all. The food trust is a regional and national leader in developing new strategies to prevent childhood obesity and other diet-related diseases through innovative programs to increase access to fresh food and provide nutrition education in underserved communities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The agency's supermarket campaign works to stimulate supermarket development in neighborhoods that are in need of access to fresh, healthy, affordable food. To do this, the food trust collaborates with government, civic, and industry leaders to implement public policies that improve access to healthy food in all neighborhoods. In pennsylvania, this effort led to the creation of the nation's first statewide supermarket financing program, the fresh food financing initiative (fffi). This $120 million leveraged fund to support supermarket development resulted in 93 new or improved supermarkets serving an estimated 500,000 residents. The food trust is currently conducting advocacy initiatives to encourage healthy food retail development in underserved communities in more than 25 states nationwide.
Activity 3
The food trust developed the healthy corner store initiative to increase the availability of nutritious food in underserved neighborhoods that lack supermarkets or other fresh-food retailers. In 2013, the food trust worked with over 660 corner store owners, providing training and technical assistance to help them stock and market healthy foods in their stores. This initiative has also expanded regionally to include 15 stores in camden, nj, and 4 stores in norristown, pa, and it is now the largest and most comprehensive healthy corner store program in the nation. The healthy corner store initiative project team also worked in 20 schools in philadelphia and norristown to educate young people about healthy snacking. Trust staff provided guidance for youth to form snackin' fresh leadership crews, each made up of about 10 student leaders who work together to implement health-focused projects and events in their schools to get their peers excited about healthy eating and physical activity.
