Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the pennsylvania bar foundation is to support programs that increase the public's understanding of the law and promote equal access to justice.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Scholarship- the james w. Stoudt memorial scholarship fund of the pennsylvania bar foundation awards modest scholarships to pennsylvania residents attending any one of the eight accredited law schools serving pennsylvania. The scholarship fund is supported by the net proceeds of an annual silent auction and undesignated contributions received from individual donors. In 2012, the foundation awarded four, $3,000 scholarships. The scholarships are awarded competitively, based on the applicant's academic progress, financial need, recommendations, and potential for making a contribution to the legal profession either through anticipated legal work or other efforts as discussed in the applicant's own words in a 250- 500 word essay. Half of the scholarships are specifically dedicated to the support of historically underrepresented minority law students. The program has awarded more than $100,000 since its inception in 2003, helping more than 90 pennsylvania law students offset some of the costs associated with their law school education.
Activity 3
Celebrate the constitution - designed to help students in grades k - 12 become better citizens, the celebrate the constitution program teams lawyers and judges with teachers to help students celebrate and learn about the us constitution. In addition to matching lawyer and judge volunteers with participating schools, the program assists teachers by providing lesson plans, classroom ideas and constitution-related materials. The annual program kicks off in september during the national constitution week celebration and continues throughout the fall. To date, schools in nearly all of pennsylvania's 67 counties have taken part in the program. Over 131,000 student participants of diverse backgrounds have "signed the constitution," and more than 30,000 pocket us constitutions are distributed to students and educators annually.
