Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

Woodmere art museum's exhibitions and educational programs offer the public opportunities to learn about, appreciate, and celebrate the art and artists of the philadelphia region.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERICE:

Overall - a dynamic museum that is growing in the vitality of its program, woodmere is the only art museum solely focused on the work of artists of the philadelphia region. The museum engages a growing and increasingly diverse audience (attendance of more than 43,000 in 2016) with eight or more vibrant, changing exhibitions that feature works from the museum's collection and works borrowed from other collectors and great museums across the country. In addition, woodmere's helen millard children's gallery features five exhibitions annually that showcase the art of young people whose schools interact with the museum. In recent years, woodmere has "broken outside of its walls," installing new monumental sculptures by harry bertoia, sam maitin and dina wind in the museum's six-acre landscape, opening a path forward for more experiences that link art and nature. Further engagement with the public is provided through an expansive array of educational and other opportunities. Woodmere is accredited by the american alliance of museums, a distinction held by only approximately five percent of museums nationwide. Also, on the national register of historic places, woodmere is designated a significant structure that contributes to the historic character of the chestnut hill historic district in philadelphia.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERICE:

Education - exhibitions at woodmere serve as a platform for an ongoing series of educational opportunities, lectures, gallery talks, family festivals and "art of observation" programs with medical schools and the philadelpia medical examiners offices, workshops, literary programs and panel discussions featuring top scholars and artists. Woodmere offers more than 200 tours annually, led by curatorial staff, artists, and docents. Studio art classes for children and adults take place in the museum's converted carriage house. Classes are taught by contracted educators, many of whom are also talented artists themselves. Approximatly 800 children were enrolled in art classes in 2016. Following state curriculum guidelines, woodmere's educators and docents also work with more than 6,000 young people in classroom groups, most of whom are economically disadvantaged. Programs are offered in schools and at the museum. A diversity of audiences regularly attend the museum's film series, yoga classes, discussion and tours for people with dementia and their caretakers, classical music performances, and woodmere's highly popular jazz series (music attendance alone was more than 4,000). Woodmere also has made great strides with its family audience, offering an interactive hay maze, special programs during chestnut hill's harry potter festival, and art-making and other engagement on martin luther king, jr. Day and during other family days. On average, more than 15 family events are planned throughout the year, including woodmere's circle of trees event that represents the annual community kick-off of the winter holiday season.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4C, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERICE:

Collection - caring for woodmere's collection of more than 6,000 works of art is a primary activity of the institution. The founder's collection, the core of which remains on view at woodmere to this day, concentrates on post-civil war american paintings, works by philadelphia artists of the 19th century, and landscape paintings of the hudson river school. Woodmere also holds one of the nation's premier collections of pennsylvania impressionists, the circle of violet oakley, the circle of arthur b. Carles, and modern and contemporary art of philadelphia. Realism, modernism, printmaking, conceptual art, and many other threads of art history have distinct and significant configurations in philadelphia, making woodmere's collection an important cultural asset of the city.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Change in beneficial interest in perpetual trust 7,522.

FORM 990, PAGE 12, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization has a finance committee which assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. The procedures of the finance committee with respect to these responsibilities have not changed from the prior year.

FORM 990, PAGE 1, LINE 19:

Under generally accepted accounting principles, the revenue over expense "decrease" was $502,512 for the current year. However, under irs regulations for the form 990, the $419,458 of unrealized gain is not included in the revenue less expenses, resulting in a $929,492 decrease shown on the form 990. The reconciliation of the revenue less expenses between the financial statements and the form 990 is also shown on page 4 of schedule d of the form 990.

FORM 990, PAGE 5, PART V, LINE 7G:

Not applicable: the organization had no contributions of qualified intellectual property.

FORM 990, PAGE 5, PART V, LINE 7H:

Not applicable: the organization had no contributions of cars, boats, airplanes, or other vehicles.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

In conformity with the practice adopted by many museums and in accordance with the provisions of fasb asc 958-605, the museum does not capitalize donated works of art and collections or recognize them as revenue or gains. Fasb asc 958-605 provides that such donations need not be recognized if they are added to collections that are held for public exhibition, education, or protected unencumbered, cared for, and preserved. The museum has a policy that requires the proceeds from sales of collection items to be used to acquire other items for its collection. The cost of all objects purchased is reported as a separate program expense. All such items on hand are currently insured for $18,300,000.

PART III, LINE 4:

The museum's collections are made up of works of art, artifacts of historical significance and art objects that are held for educational and curatorial purposes, in accordance with their exempt purpose.

PART X, LINE 2:

The museum is exempt from federal and state income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (irc) as described in section 509(a)(2) of the irc and similar state statutes; therefore, no provision for income taxes is included in the accompanying financial statements. The museum files form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, on an annual basis and is no longer subject to u.s. Federal or state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2013. Based on the museum's assessment of many factors, including past experience, the museum does not currently anticipate significant changes in its tax positions over the next 12 months.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Museum gallery and store expenses 74,868. Change in beneficial interest in perpetual trust 7,522.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Museum gallery and store expenses 74,868.

Form 990, Schedule D, Part V, Line

Part v, line 4: the intended uses of the permanent endowments are to endow the position of director of education, the ceo/executive director, and the director of development, and for other unrestricted museum use.
