Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

Woodmere art museum's exhibitions and educational programs offer the public opportunities to learn about, appreciate, and celebrate the art and artists of the philadelphia region.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

Overall: a dynamic museum that is growing in the vitality of its exhibitions and programing, woodmere is the only art museum solely focused on the work of artists of the philadelphia region. The museum engages a growing and increasingly diverse audience (attendance of more than 46,000 in 2019) through ten or more changing exhibitions and vibrant year-round programming. The collection of approximately 8,000 works of art includes the largest concentration of work by violet oakley and her circle, as well as important works by charles willson peale, benjamin west, thomas sully, frederic church, arthur b. Carles, bo bartlett, and many others. In addition, woodmere's helen millard children's gallery showcases five exhibitions annually of art made by children representing the model projects in arts education that can be replicated by teachers. In recent years, woodmere has "broken outside of its walls" installing monumental sculptures by harry bertoia, robinson fredenthal, sam maitin and dina wind on the museum's six-acre landscape, opening a path forward for more experiences that link art, nature, and ecological services. Further engagement with the public is provided through an expansive array of educational programs, a friday-night jazz program, film, and yoga. Woodmere is accredited by the american alliance of museums, a distinction held by approximately three percent of all museums nationwide. Also, on the national register of historic places, woodmere is designated a significant structure that contributes to the character of the chestnut hill historic district in philadelphia.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

Education - exhibitions at woodmere serve as a platform for an ongoing series of educational opportunities, lectures, gallery talks, family festivals, school programs, "art of observation" programs with medical schools, and panel discussions featuring top scholars and artists. Due to the 2020 pandemic, woodmere was closed for 6 months and pivoted to online programming providing programs virtually to the public and school and family audiences led by docents and education staff. Classes are taught by educators and professional artists. Approximatly 2,500 adults and children were enrolled in art classes in 2020

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4C, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

Collection - caring for woodmere's collection of more than 8,000 works of art is a primary activity of the institution. The founder's collection, the core of which remains on view at woodmere to this day, concentrates on post-civil war american paintings, works by philadelphia artists of the 19th century, and landscape paintings of the hudson river school. Woodmere also holds one of the nation's premier collections of pennsylvania impressionists, the circle of violet oakley, the circle of arthur b. Carles, and modern and contemporary art of philadelphia. Realism, modernism, printmaking, conceptual art, and many other threads of art history have distinct and significant configurations in philadelphia, making woodmere's collection an important cultural asset of the city.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

In conformity with the practice adopted by many museums and in accordance with the provisions of fasb asc 958-605, the museum does not capitalize donated works of art and collections or recognize them as revenue or gains. Fasb asc 958-605 provides that such donations need not be recognized if they are added to collections that are held for public exhibition, education, or protected unencumbered, cared for, and preserved. The museum has a policy that requires the proceeds from sales of collection items to be used to acquire other items for its collection. The cost of all objects purchased is reported as a separate program expense. All such items on hand are currently insured for $18,000,000.

PART III, LINE 4:

The museum's collections are made up of works of art, artifacts of historical significance and art objects that are held for educational and curatorial purposes, in accordance with their exempt purpose.

PART X, LINE 2:

The museum is exempt from federal and state income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (irc) as described in section 509(a)(2) of the irc and similar state statutes; therefore, no provision for income taxes is included in the accompanying financial statements. The museum files federal form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, on an annual basis and is no longer subject to u.s. Federal or state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2016. Based on the museum's assessment of many factors, including past experience, the museum does not currently anticipate significant changes in its tax positions over the next 12 months.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Museum gallery and store expenses 30,412. Change in beneficial interest in perpetual trust 392,711. Special event expenses 10,291.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Museum gallery and store expenses 30,412. Special event expenses 10,291.

Form 990, Schedule D, Part V, Line

Part v, line 4: the intended uses of the permanent endowments are to endow the position of director of education, the ceo/executive director, and the director of development, and for other unrestricted museum use.
