“GlassRoots vision is that through the involvement with GlassRoots arts, NJ residents of all ages are empowered to think creatively and realize new visions of their futures through the art of glassmaking. Widely renowned for excellence in collaborative programming, GlassRoots presents high quality, rigorous, innovative, relevant, and diverse programming that both reflects and expands the communitys interests. The Organization serves the community of Newark, New Jersey, offering programs at its glassmaking studios to Newark area middle and high school youth. The Organization's support comes mainly from private and public foundations, individual contributors and income earned through program offerings. Imagine teen entrepreneurs presenting their art and defending business plans with passion and power. Envision a young woman gaining the confidence to launch her own bead business and achieve financial security. Feel the pride of an aspiring student earning a full scholarship to college because of the GlassRoots Fellowship. These stories and countless others like them are the faces of GlassRoots today. GlassRoots empowers thousands of youth to build the skills and confidence they need to succeed, and thousands of adults to stretch themselves and explore their creativity. Each individual who walks through our doors is deeply impacted by GlassRoots' programs, unleashing their potential through the power of fire and glass. GlassRoots began in 2001 engaging 100 youth ages 10-13. Today we serve over 2500 youth, young adults and adults annually; growing from afterschool programming; joining art and STEM education in both practical and creative ways; and adding programs that develop knowledge and skills for youth and adults to succeed in an entrepreneurial economy; and outgrowing our current space. As we prepare for the next chapter in GlassRoots' history, our vision is clear: in order to continue to impact lives and grow our programs, we will transform an abandoned historic building into a creative hub that connects community members with arts and education, revitalizes a once blighted neighborhood, and drives economic growth. Our successful Campaign 2020 raised funds for the transformation as an extraordinary 23,000+ SF space awaits us in a historic 1867 building, which has been abandoned for years. As an anchor tenant, GlassRoots is working in partnership with the City of Newark, its educational, arts, and nonprofit leaders and others to be a catalyst for the development of the entire neighborhood attracting other creative businesses - galleries, restaurants, small shops - leading to redevelopment and economic growth.”
