Activity 2

Virtua provides care to many individuals that receive assistance with the costs of their healthcare under a medical assistance program. The largest such program is Medicaid, which is jointly funded by the Federal and State of New Jersey governments and is administered by the State. The program's reimbursement does not adequately cover the cost of the care provided. By absorbing the cost of care that is not reimbursed, Virtua is relieving the government of this burden. Services are provided on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, including in the emergency departments and in clinics.

Activity 3

Virtua provides a wide range of outpatient services through its Camden facility, including comprehensive primary care and specialty services for infants, children, teens and adults. Additionally, Virtua subsidizes women's clinics for gynecological and obstetrical care, as well as behavioral health and emergency trauma services. More than 700 patients were provided with emergency helicopter transportation during 2011 through the New Jersey Emergency Medical Service Helicopter Response Program. The costs associated with maintaining these services are in excess of reimbursements to Virtua.
