Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

(continued from from 990, page 1) housing issues since we were founded in 1983 as an emergency men's shelter. With a philosophy of "a hand up, not a handout," hsi has earned a reputation as one of the most respected housing organizations in the area. We started by gradually expanding our shelter and social services, then added transitional housing, and finally, included supportive housing with the establishment of our housing development (hd) division in 2004. Hsi establishes, operates and maintains shelter facilities, transitional housing and the construction and management of permanent low-income housing. Hsi educates the general public concerning the conditions within society which create the need for such facilities and obtain the necessary professional staff and volunteers to manage such facilities. For the homeless and working poor in our community, hope begins at homeless solutions, inc., a private, non-profit organization. We have been helping those in need for over 30 years. In 2018, approximatley 676 people received shelter and housing through our programs and services. 100% of the families that graduated from our transitional housing program secured permanent affordable housing. Our case managers offer the suppport needed to help our guests rebuild their lives and successfully return to independent living. We also develop permanent supportive housing that is energy efficient for very low, low, and moderate income families and individuals. In 2018 we owned and managed 66 apartments that were home to 158 adults and children. We often hear from our graduates how we have given them a "second chance at life." this exemplifies the transformative experience at hsi. This would not be possible without your support, encouragement and dedication. By supporting hsi through financial donations or volunteering, you are making a tangible difference in the lives of those most in need in our community.

Form 990, Part III - Statement of Program Service Accomplishments

(continued from form 990, page 2) hsi provides transitional housing programs, including all services needed to move people to permanent housing; hsi develops and manages affordable housing. Our guests receive services including case management, transportation to work and necessary appointments, money management and employment assistance, housing search assistance and daily living skills training. Referral services for counseling, substance abuse intervention, and prevention are also provided.

Form 990, Part XI - Financial Statements and Reporting

There has been no change from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization follows fasb asc, accounting for certain investments held by not-for-profit organizations. In accordance with this accounting standard, investments in marketable securities with readily determinable fair values and all investments in debt securities are reported at fair value in the statement of financial position. Unrealized gains and losses are included in the change in net assets. Investment income or loss (including interest and dividends and realized gains and losses on sale of investments) are included in the statement of activities unless the income or loss is restricted by the donor or law. A decline in the market value of an investment security below its cost that is designated to be other than temporary is recognized through an impairment charge. That impairment charge would be included in the statement of activities and a new cost basis would be established. For the years ended december 31, 2018 and 2017, the organization did not record any impairment charge in the consolidated statement of activities related to investments.
