Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Physicians for human rights works at the intersection of medicine, science, and law to secure human rights and justice for all. We investigate and document human rights violations, give voice to survivors and witnesses, and plant seeds of reconciliation by ensuring that perpetrators can be held accountable for their crimes.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Custody - this program focuses on freedom from cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, which is a fundamental human right established in international law. PHR's core mission in this program is to investigate and report on the devastating consequences of torture on individuals, institutions, and society as a whole. As part of obtaining this mission, PHR has established the Campaign Against Torture. This campaign investigates U.S. interrogation policies and practices which have deemed to be characterized as torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. Since the inception of the campaign, PHR has ensured that health professionals' concerns over U.S. torture policy are communicated forcefully to key policymakers, through direct advocacy and the media. The campaign continues to work intensively to reverse administration policy and legal opinions that support the use of physical and psychological torture by the CIA.
Activity 3
Conflict - this program focuses on human rights in armed conflict. Investigations are concentrated on forensic investigations, landmines, chemical weapons, medical neutrality, war crimes and gender-based violence. As part of the program, PHR has established the Darfur Survival Campaign, a campaign which mobilizes health professionals, students, and members of the general public to press for urgently needed security in Darfur, including augmented African Union troops and a U.N. peacekeeping force of 20,000, as authorized by U.N. Security Council Resolution 1706. In addition, the campaign insists on compensation and restitution for survivors. Also under the conflict program, PHR, in conjunction with other members of a small group of organizations, established a Campaign to Ban Landmines. This campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work toward achieving the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty which bans the use, trade, production, and stockpiling of antipersonnel mines. PHR launched a new project aimed at building the capacity of Burmese civil society organizations (CSOs) by training civil society leaders to scientifically document human rights violations. The project will train local partners working with ethnic minorities in four different ethnic states in Burma. To complement the training and research phases, PHR will conduct an international advocacy that uses print materials, online media and film to disseminate project findings and raise awareness among members of Burmese civil society, the media, and policymakers.
