Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To strengthen our social fabric and foster a more compassionate, inclusive, civil society by reweaving the wisdom of our traditional stories, both sacred and secular, and new understandings into education and public life.

Schedule O - 2016Purpose: To strengthen our social fabric and foster a more compassionate, inclusive, civil society, by reweaving the wisdom of our traditional stories, both sacred and secular, and new understandings into education and public life. This year, we focused on two key areas which combine our character education in schools with our community building and consciousness raising roundtables.1)the link between our successful story based character education programs in schools with improved school climate showing the resulting better behavior and better grades 2)the link between our story-based character education programs in school with the development of a more engaged citizenry and a better workforce. In short, 2 key areas for our children and the future of our society.Stories to Light Our Way Changing the face of the world through the power of storiesWisdom Thinkers Network, a New York State-based non-profit organization, has developed SEL and character education curriculum m

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Program and Service Accomplishments Our Community Engagement Roundtables reconnecting the generations, restoring civility, and changing the dominant narrative to nurture engaged compassionate citizens. While our previous roundtables were successful in bringing diverse groups of thought leaders together to create a shared narrative, we wanted a closer link between our stories in schools and the need for character education in schools, and emphasize the link between character education and workforce development. So we designed a replicable model introducing a county-wide initiative to spread the message of our stories with our roundtable. The project, entitled Inspire Oswego County, that brings educators, community and business leaders together, to focus on Why our children are failing the tests of life? Our goals is to equip all our children with the foundation needed for a meaningful life in School, Community, and the Workplace so they can become successful in their careers, caring, responsible citizens, and fulfilled in their lives. We want to bring renewed hope to often neglected parts of rural (and urban) America. Oswego County is the 2nd poorest county in NY State. We feel that if we can learn to listen to and honor each others stories we can once again create a sense of community among diverse individuals which will overcome the fear and hatred which dominate our current landscape. We want to highlight the need for a shared narrative to reweave the fabric of our society and provide opportunities for people to break through the ideological gridlock and develop a sense of shared values again. Turn-key oral history projects - http://bit.ly/2b5HzoXWe created a turn-key oral history projects which pull the generations together while instilling pride in the community which encourages students to stay in their communities and make a difference (change the story). Fulton High School English classes partnered with us to video interviews with community elders. This culminated in Gathering Around the Stories of Fulton, bringing the students and their families together with those they interviewed for an evening to share the history and envision the future of their community together. Hannibal successfully used the project to transition students from middle to high school and found they all rose in their academics due to the engagement. https://youtu.be/qxAWWbpeY0kService Learning is key to social engagement. We link project and problem based learning to student generated service learning projects to solve some key injustices poverty, elder neglect, bullying, intolerance, and environmental degradation to name a few. Our Change the Story, game was endorsed by Dr. Richard Weissbourd at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and CSEEs Dr. David Streight. This year Sandy Creeks Wisdom Thinkers student leadership team led a multi-generational environmental cleanup project along the creek. Other schools have held tree plantings linked to earth day. In the Community, our Inspiring Oswego County initiative brings educators, community and business leaders together to work for the benefit of our children and communities. We focus on sharing personal stories to bring people together. Breaking down barriers and breaking through the ideological gridlock to change the dominant narrative of conflict and distrust to a shared narrative of peace, for our children and our communities. Through our roundtables and Community Strengths Institute, we create safe-space and opportunities for adults to come together to share their stories and allow a shared-narrative to emerge. Out of these friendships and alliances, based on shared values, the group works with student leaders to improve their communities, breeding the engaged citizenry so missing in todays world and critical to a thriving democracy. We began a multi-year project to expand county-wide, our successful pilot in Cleveland Elementary school, a national blue ribbon school, which won a state and national school of character awards. Participating districts include, Central Square, Fulton, Sandy Creek, and CiTi (Oswego County BOCES).With local funding from Pathfinder Bank, the Shineman Foundation, the John Ben Snow Foundation, the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors, we began expanding the stories into other Oswego county schools. This will provide an opportunity to show the stories can help change the culture of the county.Ralph Singh, our Chair and CEO, developed and conducted 6 professional development workshops in schools, for school board associations, regional and state-wide organizations and was an invited, featured presenter at 2 national and international conferences. In addition, he attended and represented Wisdom Thinkers at 2 additional national conferences. The stories are now being used in over 200 locations nationwide. They are also used by religious and interfaith educators, in college courses, with additional applications for conflict resolution, reconciliation programs, and with troubled teens. We have found them to be especially effective for the hard-to-teach populations with a corresponding improvement in both behavior and academics. Based on these demographics our impact reached over 30,000 individuals.$68,712-
