| Schedule O - 2013Our purpose is to strengthen our social fabric and foster a more compassionate, inclusive, civil society, by reweaving the wisdom of our traditional stories, both sacred and secular, and new understandings into education and public life. This year, we focused on two key areas which combine our character education in schools with our community building and consciousness raising roundtables.1)the link between our successful story based character education programs in schools with improved school climate showing the resulting better behavior and better grades 2)the link between our story-based character education programs in school with the development of a more engaged citizenry and a better workforce. In short, 2 key areas for our children and the future of our society.Program and Service Accomplishments Our roundtables restoring civility and changing the dominant narrativeWhile our previous roundtables were successful in bringing diverse groups of thought leaders together to create a shared narrative, we wanted a closer link between our stories in schools and the need for character education in schools, and emphasize the link between character education and workforce development. So we designed a replicable model introducing a county-wide initiative to spread the message of our stories with our roundtable. The project, entitled Inspire14!, brought educators, community and business leaders together, to focus on Why our children are failing the tests of life? Our goals is to equip all our children with the foundation needed for a meaningful life in School, Community, and the Workplace so they can become successful in their careers, caring, responsible citizens, and fulfilled in their lives with a special focus on our 14 yr. olds and working learners. So the roundtable brought Oswego County Schools, Community & Businesses Together with National Experts to understand Why arent our children prepared for the tests of life? , and explore, through stories, the missing link between Character Education in Oswego County Schools and a positive, ethical culture in Oswego County workplaces & communityWe want to bring renewed hope to often neglected parts of rural (and urban) America. Oswego County is the 2nd poorest county in NY State. While much of the planning occurred in fiscal year 2013, the actual successful event took place on Sept 9th, 2014 in our fiscal yr. 2014. We feel that if we can learn to listen to and honor each others stories we can once again create a sense of community among diverse individuals which will overcome the fear and hatred which dominate our current landscape. We want to highlight the need for a shared narrative to reweave the fabric of our society and provide opportunities for people to break through the ideological gridlock and develop a sense of shared values again. Stories to Light Our Way Changing the face of the world through the power of storiesUsing the award winning Stories to Light Our Way, we help create a school climate that honors diversity, nurtures character, and discourages bullying. We create resources which embed Character Ed Lesson Plans Seamlessly into Common Core ELA, and with cross-cultural understanding. We also bring the major researched based anti-bullying simulation game Quest for the Golden Rule, which have created a custom module which includes Stories to Light our Way.We feel that we have a powerful approach to deterring the systemic problem of bullying in elementary schools, by creating a culture with the stories where bullying is not acceptable, while instructing the children on how to spot and deter bullying behavior through the games. We began a multi-year project to expand county-wide, our successful pilot in Cleveland Elementary school, a national blue ribbon school, which won a state and national school of character awards. With local funding from the Shineman Foundation and additional corporate sponsors, we began expanding the stories into other Oswego county schools. This will provide an opportunity to show the stories can change the culture of an entire county.Ralph Singh, our Chair and CEO, developed and conducted 6 professional development workshops in schools, for school board associations, regional and state-wide organizations and was an invited, featured presenter at 5 national and international conferences. In addition, he attended and represented Wisdom Thinkers at 5 additional national conferences. The stories are now being used in over 200 locations nationwide. They are also used by religious and interfaith educators, in college courses, with additional applications for conflict resolution, reconciliation programs, and with troubled teens. We have found them to be especially effective for the hard-to-teach populations with a corresponding improvement in both behavior and academics. Based on these demographics our impact reached over 10,000 individuals. | $65,092 | - |
