Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under that guidance, the organization may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the organization and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income ("ubit"). The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50% likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. There were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities for the year ended december 31, 2014.

IRS990/Desc0BEYOND SCHOOL: YOUTH ENTERING OUR PROGRAM ARE MORE THAN TWO YEARS BELOW GRADE LEVEL IN READING, ON AVERAGE, AND ARE ON TRACK TO DROP OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL. HOWEVER, GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL AND GOING TO COLLEGE IS THE BEST WAY TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF GENERATIONAL POVERTY IN THEIR FAMILY. WE WORK WITH 4TH-8TH GRADERS, THE POPULATION MOST UNDERSERVED IN OUR AREA, TO GET THEM BACK ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND. IN 2014, STUDENTS IMPROVED THEIR LITERACY LEVELS BY 3 MONTHS FOR EVERY MONTH THEY'RE WITH US - MAKING EXPONENTIAL GAINS TO GET BACK TO GRADE LEVEL. SUCCESS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND IS DETERMINED BY MORE THAN JUST ACADEMICS. TO HELP YOUTH HOLISTICALLY, WE ALSO BUILD SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL RESILIENCY, BROADEN THEIR EXPERIENCES AND AWARENESS OF FUTURE POSSIBILITIES, AND INSTILL A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY TO THEIR COMMUNITY. WE INVEST DEEPLY IN YOUTH BY PROVIDING EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES YEAR-ROUND, BOTH AFTER SCHOOL AND DURING THE SUMMER. IF YOUTH STAY WITH US FROM 4TH-8TH GRADE, THEY WILL RECEIVE THE EQUIVALENT OF AN ADDITIONAL 2.5 YEARS OF INSTRUCTION. ALL TOTAL IN 2014, 141 VOLUNTEERS SPENT MORE THAN 3,300 HOURS EMPOWERING 51 STUDENTS IN OUR PROGRAM.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0BEYOND JOBS: UNEMPLOYMENT AND UNDER-EMPLOYMENT CONTRIBUTES GREATLY TO THE GENERATIONAL CYCLE OF POVERTY IN ST. LOUIS. WE PRIMARILY SERVE MEN, MANY OF WHOM COME TO US EITHER HAVING NEVER BEEN EMPLOYED OR NOT CONSISTENTLY EMPLOYED, AND 75% OF WHOM HAVE A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND. THEY ARE OFTEN LIVING IN THE HOME OF EITHER THEIR MOTHER OR GIRLFRIEND, CONTRIBUTING LITTLE TO HOUSING EXPENSES. BEYOND JOBS IS A MULTI-PRONGED APPROACH TO CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH EMPLOYMENT. FOR THOSE WHO ARE JOB-READY, OUR EMPLOYMENT AGENCY, HIRE ST. LOUIS, CONNECTS JOBSEEKERS DIRECTLY WITH EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT JOB-READY, OUR JOB & LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM PROVIDES A YEAR-LONG SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT BEGINS WITH AN 8-WEEK INTENSIVE, FOCUSING ON JOB SKILLS, FINANCIAL LITERACY, BIBLICAL MANHOOD, PURPOSE IN LIFE, AND A PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP. ONE INTERNSHIP PROVIDER IS OUR RESALE SHOP, REVIVE, WHICH TRAINS INTERNS IN RETAIL SKILLS, INVENTORY MANAGEMENT, WOODWORKING AND TOOL LITERACY. IN 2014, 69 MEN GRADUATED JOB & LEADERSHIP TRAINING AND COMMITTED TO BECOMING LEADERS ALONGSIDE 29 HIRE ST. LOUIS EMPLOYEES. A TOTAL OF 189 VOLUNTEERS MENTORED AND INVESTED 3,971 HOURS OF THEIR TIME WITH OUR MEN. EIGHTEEN BUSINESS PARTNERS CREATED 11,599 HOURS OF WORK, WITH MEN EARNING $115,241 IN EARNED WAGES THROUGH MISSION: ST. LOUIS BEYOND JOBS PROGRAMS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0BEYOND CHARITY: WHILE EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT ARE CRITICAL FACTORS IN BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY, OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD ISSUES ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE GENERATIONAL CYCLE OF POVERTY IN ST. LOUIS. OLDER ADULTS ARE IMPORTANT MATRIARCHS AND PATRIARCHS OF THE COMMUNITY. OUR SENIOR SERVICES PROGRAMS SUPPORTED 988 OLDER ADULTS THROUGH CARE COORDINATION AND VARIOUS PROGRAMS TO HELP THEM TO LIVE SAFELY IN THEIR HOMES AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD CONTRIBUTES TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS. TO ADDRESS THIS, OUR AMP PROGRAM ATTRACTED 898 VOLUNTEERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO COMPLETE 773 SERVICE PROJECTS THAT IMPROVED THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF PEOPLE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. PERIODIC PROGRAM OUTREACHES INCLUDE AN AFFORDABLE CHRISTMAS STORE THAT WE SET UP EACH DECEMBER, A TAX RETURN PREPARATION PROGRAM EACH SPRING, SUPPORT TO THE LOCAL SCHOOL DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND A TOOL LIBRARY AVAILABLE TO RESIDENTS FOR HOME MAINTENANCE. FINALLY, WE CONTRACT WITH THE CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE THROUGH THEIR AMERICORPS*VISTA PROGRAM TO SUB-GRANT VISTA MEMBERS TO SERVE AT NONPROFITS ACROSS ST. LOUIS WHO ARE WORKING TO ADDRESS ISSUES OF POVERTY IN OUR CITY. IN 2014, 78 VISTA MEMBERS SERVED AS FULL-TIME VOLUNTEERS FOR YEAR-LONG COMMITMENTS, PLACED AT 24 LOCAL NONPROFITS.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE ACCOUNTING STANDARD ON ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES ADDRESSES THE DETERMINATION OF WHETHER TAX BENEFITS CLAIMED OR EXPECTED TO BE CLAIMED ON A TAX RETURN SHOULD BE RECORDED IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
