“1 GJCs August 12th Campaign gained widespread media attention, new partnerships, and support from major organizations, positioning GJC as a leader in the human rights field. 2 GJC in collaboration with World Organization Against Torture submitted a report that successfully demonstrated the denial of abortion to women raped in war violates US obligations under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment. 3 With GJCs input, the report of the UN Secretary-General on women, peace and security makes clear that Security Council Resolution 2122 mandates safe abortion services for girls and women raped in war in accordance with international humanitarian law. 4 GJCs advocacy successfully convinced the UK to formally adopted a new policy position stating international humanitarian law principles may justify offering an abortion rather than perpetuating what amounts to inhuman or degrading treatment. 5 GJC brought 12 women activists from the conflict countries to address policy makers at the UKs historic Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict and held a panel on creative legal strategies to ensure accountability and justice for war rape victims. 6 GJC also achieved international recognition regarding the problem of sexual violence in conflict in Burma by hosting and sponsoring a successful side-event during the annual UN Security Council Open Debate on Sexual Violence Burmese women from local partner organizations addressed UN agencies and countries missions in New York and London urging them to end ongoing impunity for sexual violence in conflict in Burma.”
