Mission

To inspire the people of charleston to connect with their parks and together create stunning public spaces and a strong community.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Beautification-Park Renovations: This signature program serves to revitalize, upgrade and transform existing parks and greenspaces. Projects within this program are developed with City and community consensus, conceptual design development and design implementation. Three major park renovation projects, Colonial Lake, Elliotborough Park and Community Garden and Corrine Jones Park, all had Conceptual Design Renovation plans completed in 2011. The renovation initiative for Colonial Lake/Moultrie Playground as the Conservancys first major community project has moved this to priority status within the community. This would not have occurred without the Conservancys efforts to move it forward. Conceptual design planning also began at Allan Park.

Education-Educate You is the educational component program complimenting the Conservancys beautification objectives. Offline educational classes occurred within the Charleston Park Angel organization with Park Angel 101 classes associated with the Conservancy cause. Basic garden techniques were also stressed as a way to improve their skill at home and in our Garden in the Parks projects. Educational instruction is also taking place at all Garden in the Park work sessions. Online resources continued to provide up to date information on local, regional and national information relating to parks, gardening and community based gardening programs. The Conservancys online presence also serves the greater community by displaying events relating to the Conservancys mission. Online video produced by the Conservancy was also introduced as an addition resource available to the general population for 2011. Educate You programing expanded significantly in 2011 to include child based classes and activities. The Help for the Home Gardener series of classes and video continued to play a expanded role in the Charleston Parks Conservancys ongoing educational offerings.

IRS990/Description0Beautification-Garden in the Parks: This signature program addresses ongoing maintenance needs within the City of Charlestons park system. The Conservancy partners with the City of Charlestons Parks and Recreation Departments. Monthly care and program management in Conservancy chosen parks comes with Conservancy staff and volunteer hands-on support throughout the year utilizing a monthly/bi-monthly planned work experience in each of the parks. Thirteen parks and greenspace locations had ongoing care with Conservancy support dollars in 2011. They were Brittlebank Park, Chapel Street Fountain Park, Etiwan Park, Marion Square Park, Simonton Park, Windermere Boulevard Community Garden, Hazel Parker Playground, Cannon Park, Riverland Terrace greenspace, Allan Park, Elliotborough Park and Community Garden, Gibbes Museum, Courtyard Garden, and Magnolia-Sycamore Greenspace. Local support for each park comes from the general Charleston Park Angel volunteer core and from neighbors surrounding those parks and greenspaces. Park Angels contributed 2,483 hours of community service to existing parks projects in 2011. The Windermere Blvd. Community Garden is a cooperative project between the Charleston Parks Conservancy, the Charleston Horticultural Society and the City of Charleston. It started in 2008 with continued care provided by both non-profit organizations. The Gibbes Museum Courtyard Garden is an ongoing cooperative project between the Charleston Parks Conservancy and the Gibbes Museum Ladies Auxiliary. The addition of 3.7 acres to Charlestons greenspace occurred through the cooperative efforts of the Charleston Parks Conservancy, the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy and Charleston County Greenbelt Program.
