Mission

To clear the path for 100% clean energy by shaping new policy at the state capitol and before administrative agencies, educating broadly about hawaii's energy challenge, and providing effective tools for residents statewide to implement smart energy solutions.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Efficiency programs: blue planet foundation enabled the installation of over 50,000 cfl light bulbs in a lighting exchange program to replace incandescent bulbs. The program engaged with over 50 groups. The organization enabled and coordinated the installation of 60 energy star efficient refrigerators on the island of lanai through an exchange program called "hui up." blue planet helped facilitate energy assessments and energy monitors for over 50 homes. The organization began development of online tools to help residents make smart energy choices in their homes.
Activity 3
Education and outreach program: blue planet foundation employed a variety of means to disseminate information to the public about hawaii's critical energy situation and how they can take part in moving towards energy independence. The organization gave over 80 presentations to schools, organizations, and community groups reaching over 5,000 people, participated in 40 community outreach events reaching over 1,000 people, and co-sponsored 4 energy themed events and forums. The organizationdeveloped a series of 8 infographics to help students and the general public understand critical energy issues.

IRS990ScheduleA/GeneralExplanation0SCHEDULE A, PART IV, SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: BLUE PLANET FOUNDATION WAS ORGANIZED IN 2007 TO PROMOTE THE AWARENESS AND USE OF ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES. THE ORGANIZATION HAS BEEN IN OPERATIONS FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 YEARS AND WHILE IT HAS STRIVED TO OBTAIN 33 1/3% OF ITS REVENUES FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC IT HAS FALLEN SHORT AND HAS RELIED ON A SUBSTANTIAL DONOR. THIS HAS ENABLED THE ORGANIZATION TO CONTINUE OPERATING ITS EXEMPT PURPOSE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS THAT DIRECTLY BENEFIT THE GENERAL PUBLIC WHILE WORKING TO GROW ITS DONOR BASE. OVER THE COURSE OF THE PAST FIVE YEARS, ITS PUBLIC SUPPORT PERCENTAGE HAS GROWN ON AN ANNUAL BASIS AND IS OPTIMISTIC IN ITS CONTINUED GROWTH SUPPORTED BY AN EXPANSION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND AN INCREASED CAPACITY FOR FUNDRAISING. PERCENTAGE OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND SOURCES OF PUBLIC SUPPORT: THE ORGANIZATION IS A YOUNG ORGANIZATION THAT RELIES ON CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO OPERATE ITS EXEMPT PURPOSE PROGRAMS. THE ORGANIZATION HAS WORKED TO PROMOTE ITS EXEMPT PURPOSE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND GROW ITS DONOR BASE, WHICH HAS BEEN A DIFFICULT TASK DUE TO RECENT ADVERSE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS. HOWEVER, THE ORGANIZATION WAS THE BENEFACTOR OF A DONOR WHOSE CONTRIBUTIONS EXCEEDED 2% OF ITS SUPPORT AND HAS NOT BEEN INCLUDED IN ITS SUPPORT TEST WHICH HAS ALSO RESULTED IN THE ORGANIZATION NOT MEETING ITS 33 1/3% SUPPORT TEST. THE ORGANIZATION'S DONOR BASE HAS GROWN ANNUALLY SINCE INCEPTION AND ITS REMAINING 17.25% PUBIC SUPPORT IS GENERATED FROM THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF VARIOUS INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, GOVERNMENT AND OTHER CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS. SUCH DONORS INCLUDE THE STATE OF HAWAII DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU, HAWAII COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AND OTHER CHARITABLE FOUNDATIONS. GRANTS RECEIVED FROM THE HAWAII COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AND CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU REQUIRE REGULAR, RIGOROUS REPORTING ON THE ORGANIZATION'S PROGRESS. THE ORGANIZATION HAD ALSO OBTAINED THE ASSISTANCE OF A PROFESSIONAL TO ASSIST WITH THE WRITING OF ITS GRANT APPLICATIONS TO FURTHER IMPROVE ITS SUPPORT FROM THE GOVERNMENT AND OTHER CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS. THE ORGANIZATION MONITORS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PAST PROPOSALS. REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNING BODY: THE ORGANIZATION'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS A DIVERSE GROUP THAT NOT ONLY REPRESENTS THE BROAD INTEREST OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC BUT ALSO BRINGS TO THE ORGANIZATION EXPERTISE FROM PUBLIC OFFICIALS, COMMUNITY LEADERS AND INDUSTRY LEADERS IN THE FIELD OF RENEWABLE ENERGY. THE BOARD INCLUDES, AMONGST OTHERS, A FORMER GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF HAWAII, THE DEAN OF UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII'S ENGINEERING SCHOOL, OWNER OF A RENEWABLE ENERGY COMPANY, UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII PROFESSOR OF LAW FOCUSED ON CLIMATE AND ENERGY POLICY AND THE CHANCELLOR EMERITUS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII. AVAILABILITY OF PUBLIC FACILITIES OR SERVICES: ON A CONTINUING BASIS, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES ENERGY EFFICIENCY ENGAGEMENT SERVICES TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND ONGOING EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE PRESENTATIONS, COMMUNITY EVENTS AND FORUMS AND PREVIOUSLY SPONSORED THE HAWAII CLEAN ENERGY DAY EVENTS. THE ORGANIZATION HAS ALSO ORGANIZED ONGOING LIGHTING AND ENERGY STAR APPLIANCE EXCHANGES PROGRAMS IN HAWAII. PLEASE REFER TO PAGE 2 OF THE FORM 990 FOR DETAILED INFORMATION REGARDING THE PROGRAMS.
