IRS990/Desc0InPlay.org - Platform and guide for out of school activitiesLack of access to opportunities has been cited by education researchers as a key driver for the achievement gap experienced by underserved students. Many underserved students lose ground over the summer months because they do not participate in or have access to the stimulating, out of school learning environments of their peers. InPlay helps close that gap by providing an online service that matches all students to the best available opportunities for them and supports the participation of underserved students by matching them with available scholarships, subsidies and other services that address their needs. In 2018 InPlay continued existing partnerships with the Fremont Unified School District, the Oakland Unified School District, and others while beginning additional partnerships with Mountain View and other school districts, cities and counties to provide all families in those communities with a comprehensive, online service to easily search for and find the opportunities that best fit into their lives. The number of low income and underserved families in these communities, estimated from those qualifying for free and reduced lunch programs, range from approximately 25% to 80%. During this second year of full deployment, the system demonstrated the ability to deliver the service and assist thousands of families in finding appropriate and available opportunities. InPlay also continued to develop the core technology, improve the user interface, and streamline support operations in order to grow the service and increase opportunities for as many students and families as possible. This includes, for example, being the only provider to provide a comprehensive list of the free activities, such as those sponsored by the cities, within the communities served by InPlay.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Magical Bridge Playgrounds and Initiatives: Strengthening communities by building a culture of inclusivity through playSince 2016, UnaMesa has supported the Magical Bridge initiative including entering into an agreement with the City of Redwood City to build a new Magical Bridge Playground as a regional attraction for Redwood City and the surrounding region. In 2018, these efforts greatly expanded as the initiative engaged 4 additional cities in Santa Clara County. To better meet the growing operational needs and fundraising efforts of the Magical Bridge projects, all of the Magical Bridge activities were transferred to the new Magical Bridge Foundation with the mission focused exclusively on strengthening communities by building a culture of inclusivity through play. This transition took place throughout 2018 and the many achievements and progress of the Magical Bridge Initiative and Redwood City Magical Bridge Playground are documented in the annual report for the Magical Bridge Foundation. These achievements include fostering a large outpouring of community support for inclusive play with several thousand donors financially supporting the creation of playgrounds across 5 different cities. It also includes partnerships with other nonprofits and industry groups to advance the field and support many different aspects of inclusive design, play, and culture. All remaining funds raised by UnaMesa to support the creation of Magical Bridge Playgrounds have been transferred to the Magical Bridge Foundation for the express purpose of creating those playgrounds. Completion of the Magical Bridge Playground in Redwood City is expected in 2019.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Community Launchpad and Belle Haven Action: Strengthening communities and building a culture of local engagementThe Community Launchpad (CoLaunchpad) was initiated in 2015 by UnaMesa to bring together a network of community leaders to provide peer to peer support for developing and pursuing initiatives that serve the local community. In 2018, UnaMesa continued this support on an informal level for many community initiatives with a particular focus on Belle Haven Action. Initiated in 2016, Belle Haven Action was begun by two community leaders in a very underserved region of Menlo Park. The Belle Haven Community has been undergoing extreme stress and displacement as many large commercial developments take place on and within their borders fueled by the technology and construction boom. With many youth living in cars and many longtime families in the neighborhood at risk, the Belle Haven Action leaders have been engaging with local community members to strengthening education, healthcare, housing assistance and other services for the neighborhood. Example achievements in 2018 include improving the routes to school for children in the community to make them more safe and welcoming; providing nutritious meals at bus stops for the many children of the neighborhood who suffer from food insecurity; organizing several community building events and helping individuals and families with insecure housing access the resources and programs available to them. Overall, Belle Haven is helping to bring a voice to the neighborhood community to address the many challenges and developments threatening their existing way of life.
