| IRS990/Description | 0 | See Schedule O: Exalt Youth (hereafter referred to as Exalt) serves 178 NYC court-involved youth, ages 15-19, annually. Exalt is designed to serve NYC's most neglected and hard to serve youth and those involved in the criminal justice system. Exalt is one of the few organizations dedicated specifically to serving court-involved youth, particularly on a voluntary basis. Exalt serves youths with varying levels of justice system involvement-from a school fight that leads to first arrest, to a young person exiting Rikers Island in need of recuperative services. Exalt therefore acts as a prevention for deeper justice system involvement to those youths teetering on the precipice, and as a catalyst for integration to our economic mainstream for those who have already become enmeshed in the system referred to Exalt from contacts throughout the criminal justice system including defense attorneys, New York State's Office of Children and Family Services, the Department of Probation, Foster Care Agencies, schools and peers who have gone through Exalt's program. Exalt's goal is to be a transformative adolescent development experience rather than simply a job readiness program. All aspects of our program are designed to help participants develop four core skills: Critical thinking, communication, creative problem solving, and "resource management" - the ability to identify, effectively utilize, leverage and develop resources. These core skills are recognized and emphasized by national employment standards and deemed as protective factors against (further) juvenile justice involvement by the office of juvenile justice and delinquency prevention. Through program cycles serving distinct youth cohorts, the Exalt youth internship program is rigorous and requires merely daily participation. The Exalt youth internship program consists of the following components: Six weeks of a pre-internship classroom component helping students develop employability and life skills, two months of paid internships in youth's field of interest, four weeks of a post-internship class in which students synthesize their previous classroom and internship experiences and collectively prepare to move towards further educational, personal and employment goals, six months of individual and group post internship skill development and support services, and an alumni network that provides on going access to career development and other resources. Exalt is a gateway intervention which provides disconnected youth with the incentive and support to re-engage in and pursue education, thereby widening their employment options for the future. Studies indicate that a criminal record has a negative impact on wages of $6,000/yr. Exalt's critical intervention at a pivotal point in our participant's lives has a tremendous impact on both societal cost savings due to decreased rates of incarceration (1.9 mil for one year's cohort of graduates) and their long term economic prospects. The increase in long term earnings for one year's cohort of Exalt graduates is upwards of 2 million. Summary of achievements: In five years Exalt has grown from a small start up to a successful organization that has served 386 youth through twenty-seven program cycles, demonstrating great success. 90% of program graduates have avoided receiving a new conviction (this compares extremely favorably with a city-wide rate of 30% for youth exiting detention without intervention). 94% of program graduates remain enrolled in school or have obtained a high school diploma or GED since graduating from our program. Exalt has placed our youth in over 70 internships spanning a range of small creative businesses and non-profits that are engaged in issues that connect to our participants lives.
