Form 990, Part I, Line 6

The Organizations Board members are all volunteers. Other volunteers assist during groundbreaking and welcome home ceremonies this assistance includes, but is not limited to, working as greeters, setting up chairs, and putting up flags. During the 2019 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and the 2020 National Gala, volunteers assisted in may ways. They assisted with guest check-in, setup of silent auction, check out after the event, and helping everything run smooth.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

First Accomplishment Each home is built to address the special adaption standards for the veteran who will live in the home and is designed to ensure maximum independence, within budget constraints. The veterans mortgage amount is determined at the end of the building process and is based on the required minimum 50,000 veteran investment, VA grants, Helping a Hero grants, upgrades, and any excess costs of the land. The home is recorded at cost plus and in0kind donations from the builder or other sources. The organization has awarded home grants in 23 states. The organization conducts a groundbreaking ceremony before the construction of a new home for a wounded warrior. The ceremony allows the Organization to introduce the wounded warrior and his or her family to the community, educate the community about the needs of the wounded warrior, educate other businesses about the opportunity for giving back to wounded warriors, and honor the wounded warior for his or her service. The Organizatin has a welcome home ceremony when the home is completed and the wounded hero has taken ownership and is ready to move in. The ceremony allows the Organization to thank all the vendors who donated time and or products to the home, as well as, educate the community about the adaptation needs of the wounded hero as a result of his or her permanent injuries.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B

The caregivers, primarily spouces and parents, face the 24/7 day to day challenges supporting our wounded warriors. They are often overlooked and unrecognized. The Organization organizes and offers retreats that pamper, provide encouragement, fun, and camaraderie for these caregivers. The wounded warriors have often been in the military since leaving high school and therefore often are unfamiliar with home maintenance, repair responsibilities, and cost. The Organization endeavors to help them develop and make better financial decisions thoughtout the term of the program.Emergance Needs and Recreation Support The organization provides ongoing support for wounded warriors and their families, with priority given to home recipients. This support includes financial support, invitations to sports events, rodeos, fishing and hunting outings, other forms of recreation and entertainment, and the annual Operation Merry Christmas. Over 500 wounded worriors have received assistance.

IRS990/Desc0The Wounded Hero Home Program is the signature program for severly wounded warriors injured while supporting the global war on terror. Traditionally, homes are built in master-planned communities with the developer and builder donating time and materials toward the construction of the house, in addition to their paid services. Helping a Hero.org donates cash funds and oversees the project. The veteran is required to take out a minimum 50,000 mortgage on the home plus contribute the proceeds of their VA specially adapted housing grant for which most of the veterans selected for this program are eligible.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Procedures for Monitoring the Use of Grant Funds, Initial Screening and Selection Once a potential grant applicant applies for aid, they are screened by phone or email to evaluate their initial eligibility. Minimum eligibility requirements are 90 or greater disabled, as rated by the VA and verifiable service in the Global War on Terror GWOT. After the intial screening, a formal wrriten application must be submitted. The application includes a formal application, the applicants DD-214 Certificate of Relase or Discharge from Active Duty, photos, and VA eligibility documents. The written applications and documents are reviewed and verified by Application Committee. The Board then decides which applicants will be invited to enter the Wounded Hero Home Program. The Board also decides which recipients will receive a cash grant which will be paid toward the purchase of a house, the construction of which will be facilitated by Helping a Hero. Some applicants are intially deferred and may be selected later if additional resources become available. At Helping a Heros Annual Gala, Wounded Hero Home Program awardees are the guests of honor and each new recipient receives a symbolic House Key in a presentation ceremony. The documentation for the grants aare kept at the corporate headquarters in Houston, Texas.
IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Home Building Facilitation The next stage is selecting the lot and builder for the home. Several communities in the veterans preferred geographic area are scouted and two to three communities are identified by Helping a Hero for lot availability. Ideally, the developer donates the lot in a master planned community. Where no master planned communities exist, Helping a Hero endeavors to roll the land or lot price into the project price often a smaller house must be constructed to offset the expense of the lot. Alternatively, the veteran may opt to purchase a lot of their own choice, to be paid by the veteran. Helping a Hero refines the selection based on veteran preference as to which lot works best. Helping a Hero then identifies a builder willing and able to construct a home on the chosen lot and obtains a home floor plan that can be modidied to meet the adaptability criteria and is within budget. Once the floor plan has been modified based on the veterans needs, a review occurs with the veteran where additional modifications can be made as needed. Again, the verteran is very involved in this stage of the process. Once decisions about lot, builder, and floor plan have been made, the veteran is sent a formal offer letter listing the details of their home offer for acceptance. Once the offer letter is signed and returned, the construction contract is executed and the physical building process begins. A GroundBreaking ceremony is held on the land. This is described in more detail in Part III of the 990. Where the VA Specially Adapted Houstin SAH grant will be used, VA regulations are followed with input from the veteran to ensure adaptions comply VA SAH standards or a waiver is obtained. The floor plans are adapted to comply with applicable VA standards before construction starts. Upon completion, these adaptations are verified by an SAH inspector from the VA. In may cases, the builder and subcontractors will donate or discount their materials and services towards the overall cost of the house. A component of the construction process are visits by Helping a Hero personnel to ensure that the builder and sub-contractors stay in compliance with the applicable standards.
IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The wounded warrior is also kept apprised of the construction process. Documentation is kept at the corporate headquarters in Houston, Texas. Once the home has been completed, the total cost , including in-kind donations, is tabulated. The veteran applies for a mortgage or may pay the veteran portion of the home with TSGIL or other funds. Any VA housing grant that is awarded at the the time the veteran takes title to the new home is also used to pay for the construction, in addition to the veterans minimum 50,000 payment. If necessary, Helping a Hero may advance the VA grant funds during the building phase and will be repaid upon completion of the construction when the VA grant is awarded. Helping a Hero donates the balance of the construction cost of the house, Beyond the hero mortgage, in kind donations, and VA grants. Helping a Hero holds a Welcome Home Ceremony when the home is completed and the wounded hero has closed on the property and taken title. This is described more fully in Part III of the 990. Relevant documentation is kept at the corporate headquarters in Houston, Texas.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The Organizations Board members are all volunteers.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The 990 is reviewed by the Board prior to filing.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3First Accomplishment Each home is built to address the special adaption standards for the veteran who will live in the home and is designed to ensure maximum independence, within budget constraints.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4The caregivers, primarily spouces and parents, face the 24/7 day to day challenges supporting our wounded warriors.
