Activity 2

Democracy, governance and community development: ird-us's approach to civil society and community development cuts across all sectors of ird's work: we mainstream citizen engagement in improving access to economic opportunities, health, education, infrastructure, social resources, and services. In 2012, ird-us continued its successful implementation of a united nations development program (undp) project in the republic of sudan. Key to strengthening the sudan comprehensive peace agreement that ended the civil war is the continued disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of thousands of ex-combatants. Ird-us helped to facilitate and accelerate the economic and social reintegration of former combatants into civil society, contributing to broader reconciliation and recovery across sudan, through its provision of reintegration services for ex-combatants in small business/vocational training (rssc-iv) program. We implemented these activities in close collaboration with undp and the sudan demobilization and disarmament reintegration commission (sddrc) to provide ex-combatants with civilian status and the support to develop sustainable livelihoods.

Activity 3

Community stabilization program: ird-us's community stabilization capabilities support a wide range of donor and partner priorities including: relief and humanitarian assistance, strengthening community resilience against violent extremism and building capacity of civil society and local government to support the transition to democracy. For example, ird-us continued its partnership with unhcr in yemen, begun in 2010, with a project aimed at strengthening the self-management capacity of the somali, iraqi, eritrean and ethiopian refugee communities which have fled to this small country. Through targeted trainings for refugee committees and sub-committees, ird-us's success in building the capacity of the various refugee committees was demonstrated most clearly during the civil unrest, as the program supported community leaders, outreach workers, and volunteers in organizing the displaced communities and addressed the needs of the most vulnerable. Having demonstrated its emergency response capacity and humanitarian drive, ird-us is now responsible for managing unhcr's assistance program to vulnerable urban refugees.
