FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The mind trust's mission is to provide every indianapolis student access to an excellent education by amplifying the power of neighborhoods and communities to lead education change, supporting schools to grow and excel in a thriving education ecosystem, and disrupting systemic racism in education. The mind trust strives to ensure indianapolis is a city where every child has access to an excellent education, in pursuit of a day when race and income are no longer predictors of life outcomes by tripling the number of students within indianapolis public schools geography who are academically proficient by 2027. Using 2021 as a baseline, the mind trust's overarching goal is to ensure that at least three times as many students are academically proficient by 2027. The mind trust executes on this goal by continuously pursuing racial equity; ensuring students have access to high-quality schools and educators; empowering families and communities; and sustaining a strong education landscape in indianapolis.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The mind trust operates three incubators - the innovation school fellowship, the charter school fellowship, and the education entrepreneur fellowship - that help grow high quality public schools and education nonprofits in indianapolis. The innovation school fellowship helps launch innovation network schools, autonomous public schools within the indianapolis public schools, the city's largest school district, and the mind trust's educator empowerment awards help high-performing schools convert to innovation network school status. Through its charter school fellowship, the mind trust helps launch or expand excellent public charter schools, autonomous schools that operate independently of the school district and are free from many state regulations, allowing them to be more innovative and flexible in the classroom. The education entrepreneur fellowship launches innovative, high-quality nonprofit education organizations that address specific challenges facing local schools and students. The mind trust amplifies the voices of communities to advocate for educational equity and change by establishing and enhancing partnerships with community members and organizations to address barriers for marginalized students. To support and engage the community, the mind trust awards school community partnership investments to increase partnerships between k-12 public schools, community-based organizations, nonprofits, and churches in indianapolis. The mind trust also hosts community conversations, education tours, and other events to expose indianapolis leaders and stakeholders to the issues facing public schools in indianapolis. The mind trust is committed to a constant pursuit of racial equity with a focus on eliminating the predictability of race in determining a student's academic success. This focus and commitment are integrated throughout the mind trust's priorities given its central impact on student learning. The mind trust offers indianapolis equity cohorts, with separate tracks for schools and school networks and nonprofits that allow participants to examine bias in staff hiring and retention practices, and build capacity to lead their organizations' diversity, equity, and inclusion work. The mind trust also works to maintain and strengthen the conditions for student success through policy, advocacy, effective system-level solutions, and collaboration within the education sector. The mind trust is a funding intermediary and local champion for entrepreneurial education ventures in indianapolis.

The mind trust recognizes a tax position as a benefit only if it is more likely-than-not that the position will be sustained upon examination, including resolutions of any related appeals or litigation processes, based on the tax position's technical merits. At june 30, 2022, the mind trust did not recognize a benefit from any uncertain tax positions. It is difficult to predict the final timing and resolution of any particular uncertain tax positions. Based on the mind trust's assessment of many factors, including past experience and complex judgements about future events, the mind trust does not currently anticipate any significant changes in its uncertain tax positions over the next twelve months.
