Mission

Archival foundation was created to serve as a supporting organization of the academy foundation. Beginning july 1, 2006, the primary purpose of the organization is to operate and manage the douglas fairbanks center for motion picture study (fairbanks center), the margaret herrick library, and the academy film archive. The library and film archive serve as central sources of information on all facets of motion pictures. The fairbanks center houses the margaret herrick library. Founded in 1931, the library's world-renowned non-circulating reference and research collection is devoted to history and development of the motion picture as an art form and industry. It is one of the most complete collections of film-related materials ever assembled. It includes books, pamphlets, periodicals, still photographs, scripts, clippings files, personal and business correspondence, production memoranda, sketches, sheet music, music scores, and scrapbooks. The academy film archive focuses on the collection, preservation, documentation and exhibition of films, and on research access to them. Most of the archive's acquisitions are motion picture features and shorts distributed in the u.s. The total collection currently comprises over 155,000 items covering some 78,000 individual titles.

Descrip of collection of art, historical treasures or other similar assets: the holdings of the margaret herrick library and academy film archive include documents, photographs and motion pictures that are made available to students and scholars for motion picture industry and art form research. The collections are carried at no value on the statement of financial position under asc 958-605-25-19 (f/k/a sfas 116).

Description of the organization's collections: the archival foundation's collections consist of a wide range of materials documenting film as both an art form and an industry.
