The carpe diem string quartet is dedicated to achieving the highest level of performance by championing music of living composers with a balance of the classics and uncovering overlooked treasures of the chamber music repertoire. Carpe diem is committed to musical education, integration with other art forms, and developing future lifelong music lovers. In addition to the classics, the innovative and entrepreneurial carpe diem performs contemporary music, popular music, their own original compositions, and also commissions new works, thereby augmenting the string quartet repertoire. By performing programs designed to appeal to audiences of all ages, means, and circumstances and establishing classical music's relevance to their lives, carpe diem creates new audiences inside and outside of the concert hall and revitalizes the chamber music experience.”

“Choices gives the group greater leverage in attracting younger and broader audiences. This customization makes the group relevant to people who may have had no prior experience with classical music or stringed instruments. From 1 july 2015 to 30 june 2016 the quartet performed concerts and visited classrooms, skilled nursing facilities and retirement communities throughout the united states, with appearances at venues including the frick gallery's first fridays event in pittsburgh pa for more than 3,000 people. They also appeared in bennington and greensboro vt, buffalo and new york ny, naples and little palm island fl, and boulder, dillon, and denver co, with an additional appearance on colorado public radio. The quartet visited elementary, middle school and high schools in crawfordville, tallahassee, havana, quincy, and gretna, fl, which resulted in an unprecedented 3 busloads of school children requesting transport to attend the ticketed concert as a result of our events at their schools. Cdsq worked with young pre-professionals at the bach parley string academy and also performed at senior living facilities in tallahassee florida. The quartet also worked with and performed for students in classrooms in hilliard and toledo oh, as well as ann arbor, hart, and grand rapids mi. Carpe diem also gave masterclasses, question and answer sessions, and panel discussions about music and entrepreneurship at north texas community college in mt. Pleasant tx. The quartet enjoyed their third residency at carnegie mellon university in pittsburgh pa, where they worked with graduate student composers, performing and recording their works, and offering real-world advice about succeeding in today's musical landscape. Carpe diem was once again in residence at the bennington chamber music conference in vermont, performing concerts and teaching and coaching adult amateur chamber musicians. Due to the collaborative nature of many of the quartet's programs, carpe diem was able to bring their audiences a wide variety of music from around the globe, including collaborations with: john gunther - saxophone (american jazz); yihan chen - pipa (chinese music); derrik jordan - drums, and scott mcconnell - steel pan (african music); dariush saghafi - santur (iranian music); as well as a collaborative concert in story with columbus ohio author linda kass. Carpe diem continued to extend its mission of using music as a tool to bridge into communities and raise awareness. The quartet brought free family concerts to the central ohio community on seize the music concert weekends, inviting families of all sizes and children of all ages to listen and enjoy the music, while maintaining an informal atmosphere and an open question and answer dialogue throughout the event. Carpe diem also performed free concerts for skilled nursing facilities and in a wide variety of venues, including a concert at winchester place in canal winchester, oh. Carpe diem continued their popular columbus-based series seize the music at the mcconnell arts center (mac) in worthington oh, exploring multiple musical genres as well as presenting the standard quartet repertoire. World and ohio premieres of works by modern composers including korine fujiwara, einojuhani rautavaara, esa pekka salonen, erberk eryilmaz, reza vali, lev "ljova" zhurbin, derrik jordan, dumisani maraire, kevin volans, bradley sowash, and adam schoenberg. These were paired with works from the standard repertoire by antonin dvorak, george gershwin, alexander borodin, bedrich smetana, and dmitri shostakovich, as well as rarely performed quartets by erkki melartin, jean sibelius, samuel coleridge-taylor, and charles griffes. Carpe diem's series programming in 2015-16 represented repertoire from finland, zimbabwe, south africa, usa, iran, turkey, the romani people, czechoslovakia, russia, and england.
