IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation0From 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012 the Carpe Diem String Quartet continued their community engagement program Carpe Diem MusiCare, providing free concerts through Carpe Diem for the transient population of the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center, as well as for residents in nursing facilities, hospitals, hospices, Alzheimer units, and similar institutions, while at home and while on tour. Through this program, Carpe Diem was able to reach a largely under served population who otherwise would have had no way to attend or hear concerts, and provided a valuable healing experience to them. Many of these institutions have high percentages of both minority and economically disadvantaged populations. These free performances allow facilities from all socioeconomic levels to take advantage of this program.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation1Carpe Diem String Quartet continued their program Music From The Start, which brought Carpe Diem into Columbus Head Start programs at Allegheny, Linden Lutheran, and Easter Seals, reaching preschool aged children from economically disadvantaged families. Carpe Diem was able to make multiple visits over the course of the year and establish familiarity with the young students, their teachers, and their families. These programs included interactive concerts, sing along participation, and hands on opportunities with actual preschool sized stringed instruments introduced into each classroom and placed into the hands of every child. This program was made possible by a grant from the PNC Foundation.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation2Through the same grant from the PNC Foundation, Carpe Diem was also able to continue an extensive program with the Bexley OH city schools, where the quartet visited every elementary, middle school, and high school string program within the school district, worked with the string students throughout the year in small group and large group settings. Additionally, the quartet continued to provide concerts in school settings from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in other Ohio school districts and on tour throughout the United States, to music students and non-music students alike, supplementing existing music programs and bringing music into schools where no program currently exists. The audiences for all of these engagement programs, while vastly different, have one element in common a need for non-traditional programs and musical programming that falls outside the normal classical repertoire. Carpe Diem adjusted and altered programming to custom fit these widely varied demographics to suit each audience. Altering the programs and musical choices both gives the group greater leverage in attracting younger and broader audiences, and makes the group relevant to people who may have had no prior experience with classical music or stringed instruments. Through the above programs, Carpe Diem was able to perform 59 engagement visits, 23 of them in Ohio, reaching populations that ranged in age from 3 years old to elderly adults, from all demographics, in FY 2012
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation3Carpe Diem continued their popular Columbus-based series Seize the Music, exploring multiple musical genres and collaborations with non-traditional chamber music guest artists, as well as presenting the standard quartet repertoire. Hosted by the Harrison Park Community Center, Carpe Diem retained a neighborhood presence and identity, as part of their regular performance season. In an effort to make these programs more accessible to the student population, Carpe Diem continued their voucher program with Columbus State Community College allowing dramatically reduced admission for students. The quartet continued their free concerts for families, carpe diem kids at Harrison.com. All concerts were interactive. The audience, parents and children alike were encouraged to speak, ask questions, and otherwise participate in the concert experience. By making these concerts free of charge, Carpe Diem was able to provide this experience to many families, as well as to a large group of patients suffering from Alzheimers patients, who otherwise might not be able to attend a chamber music concert.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation4The first concert weekend entitled Zen, Music, and the Art of Tea united music from several countries using tea as a common element. Carpe Diem partnered with Columbus Ohio tea salon ZenCha, who provided a wide selection of different teas from around the world for the event. Highlights included a Chinese Tea Ceremony, coordinated to music written by contemporary Chinese composer Lei Liang and performed by the quartet and Chinese pipa player Yihan Chen, and a special demonstration of Tai Chi swordsmanship by Grand Master Tian Rong An, to Chinese traditional folk music.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation5The second concert weekend entitled Voices of Angels was a partnership between Carpe Diem, The Columbus Childrens Choir, and local Columbus composers. Carpe Diem finished the Seize the Music season with its PNC ArtsAlive project A Persian Musical Feast which expanded the usual two concert weekend to a three concert festival weekend, with sold out events each evening, partnering with various local Columbus businesses. Every performance was preceded by a selection of Persian food provided by Nanak Bakery and Restaurant, a locally owned Iranian establishment in Westerville, Ohio. ZenCha Tea Salon provided a selection of Persian teas. Panelists from the Columbus Persian community shared their thoughts and observations about the Persian experience, a presentation of the history, creation, and traditions of Persian rugs and carpets was given by Haddad Oriental Rugs, internationally renowned Persian scholar Dick Davis spoke about Persian poetry, and a free mini concert of traditional Persian Classical music was presented by Persian musicians. A grant from the PNC Foundation Grant made it possible for these panel discussions, mini concert, and delicious Persian culinary delights to be provided free of charge to all those in attendance, as well as reduced prices for the ticketed concerts.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation6Carpe Diem continued its collaborations with the Columbus Dance Theatre. Both organizations are committed to combining different art forms to create new and original projects that reach outside the traditional boundaries of both mediums. All works feature the dancers and musicians on stage together. Carpe Diem toured in three states with singer songwriter folk rock guitarist Willy Porter and enjoyed a new partnership with Philadelphia guitarist and composer Andrew Lipke, with performances in Philadelphia on the NPR show World Cafe. This collaboration allowed both groups to continue to diversify both their music and their audience. The Carpe Diem String Quartet performed more than ninety concerts in thirty-three states, serving populations ranging from small towns to major metropolitan areas. The quartet performed in venues such as large concert halls, intimate recital settings, and auditoriums in inner city and suburban school systems, bringing its traditional and eclectic repertoire to audiences throughout the United States.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation7Carpe Diem continued Scale the Summit, in Summit County, Colorado, for the local music students, expanding the festival to two weeks. Many musicians have long frequented the mountain resorts of Colorado in the summer, bringing with them wealthy students and audiences from out of town, but few institutes offer to teach the children of the families who reside in Colorado year round. Carpe Diem worked with these local students individually, in small ensemble coachings, orchestral seminars, and in improvisational masterclasses. Carpe Diem remains committed to original compositions, new music, and living composers.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation8The quartet recorded its seventh commercial CD Positive Energy, an eclectic collection of Carpe Diem String Quartet exclusives and favorites on the Seize the Music label, featuring the rarely performed Mendelssohn Op 80 quartet along with original music written for the quartet by Bruce Wolosoff and Bradley Sowash as well as custom arrangements by members Charles Wetherbee and Korine Fujiwara. CDSQ also commissioned two new quartets by American composers Richard Jordan Smoot and Jonathan Leshnoff.
