| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 2 | Carpe Diem String Quartets core mission is to redefine the chamber music experience, forge a new identity for chamber music, and bring musical access to the widest audience possible, regardless of means and circumstance. The Carpe Diem String Quartet is dedicated to achieving the highest level of performance by championing music of living composers with a balance of the classics and uncovering overlooked treasures of the chamber music repertoire. Carpe Diem is committed to musical education, integration with other art forms, and developing future lifelong music lovers. In addition to the classics, Carpe Diem performs contemporary music, popular music, their own original compositions, and also actively commissions new works, thereby augmenting the string quartet repertoire. By performing programs designed to appeal to audiences of all ages, means, and circumstances and establishing classical musics relevance to their lives, Carpe Diem creates new audiences inside and outside of the concert hall and revitalizes the chamber music experience. Carpe Diem String Quartet is extensively committed to community engagement. From 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 the Carpe Diem String Quartet expanded their community engagement program Carpe Diem MusiCare to include free concerts for the transient population of the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center. This is a young population that fluctuates demographically, but is typically more than 50 percent minority. Exact figures are available from the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 3 | Carpe Diem continued to perform free concerts through Carpe Diem MusiCare for residents in nursing facilities, hospitals, hospices, Alzheimer units, and similar institutions, while at home and while on tour. Through this program, Carpe Diem was able to reach a largely under served population who otherwise would have had no way to attend or hear concerts, and provided a valuable healing experience to them. Many of these institutions have high percentages of both minority and economically disadvantaged populations. These free performances allow facilities from all socio economic levels to take advantage of this program. Carpe Diem String Quartet initiated a new program, Music From The Start, which brought Carpe Diems members into Columbus Head Start programs at Allegheny, Linden Lutheran, and Easter Seals, reaching preschool aged children from economically disadvantaged families. Carpe Diem was able to make multiple visits over the course of the year and establish familiarity with the young students, their teachers, and their families. These programs included interactive concerts, sing along participation, and hands on opportunities with actual preschool sized stringed instruments introduced into each classroom and placed into every childs hands. This program was made possible by a grant from the PNC Foundation. Through the same grant from the PNC Foundation, Carpe Diem was also able to initiate an extensive program with the Bexley, Ohio City Schools, where the quartet visited every elementary, middle school, and high school string program within the school district, worked with the string students throughout the year in small group and large group settings, and performed with them on a concert. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 4 | Additionally, the quartet continued to provide concerts in school settings from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in other Ohio school districts and on tour throughout the United States, to music students and non-music students alike, supplementing existing music programs and bringing music into schools where no program currently exists. The audiences for all of these engagement programs, while vastly different, have one element in common a need for non-traditional programs and musical programming that falls outside the normal classical repertoire. Carpe Diem adjusted and altered programming to custom fit these widely varied demographics to suit each audience. Altering the programs and musical choices both gives the group greater leverage in attracting younger and broader audiences, and makes the group relevant to people who may have had no prior experience with classical music or stringed instruments. Through the above programs, Carpe Diem was able to perform more than 50 engagement visits in Central Ohio alone, reaching populations that ranged in age from 3 years old to elderly adults, from all demographics, in FY 2011. Carpe Diem continued their popular Columbus-based series Seize the Music, exploring multiple musical genres and collaborations with non-traditional chamber music guest artists, as well as presenting the standard quartet repertoire. Hosted by the Harrison Park Community Center, Carpe Diem retained a neighborhood presence and identity, as part of their regular performance season. In an effort to make these programs more accessible to the student population, Carpe Diem established a voucher program with Columbus State Community College allowing dramatically reduced admission for students. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 5 | The quartet continued their free concerts for families, carpe diem kids at Harrison.com. All concerts were interactive. The audience, parents and children alike were encouraged to speak, ask questions, and otherwise participate in the concert experience. By making these concerts free of charge, Carpe Diem was able to provide this experience to many families, as well as to a large group of Alzheimers patients, who otherwise might not be able to attend a chamber music concert. Carpe Diem continued its collaborations with the Columbus Dance Theatre. Both organizations are committed to combining different art forms to create new and original projects that reach outside the traditional boundaries of both mediums. All works feature the dancers and musicians on stage together. A high point in the FY 2011 season was the production of Courage, an evening length multimedia presentation involving a commission of original music by American composer Korine Fujiwara written for Courage, in collaboration with the American Civil Liberties Union and Columbus Dance Theatre, with video design by Columbus videographer John Ray, new choreography by Columbus Dance Theatres artistic director Tim Veach, and live music performed by Carpe Diem String Quartet. This exciting collaboration examined how fear creates ambivalence that fosters injustice, and highlighted what it means to have the audacity to stand up to racial profiling in the face of fear. Courage was premiered in March 2011. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 6 | Carpe Diem also collaborated with Thodos Dance Chicago, Broadways legendary Tony Award winning dancer and choreographer Ann Reinking, and Artistic Director Melissa Thodos, in the world premiere of The White City Chicagos Columbian Exposition of 1893, to rave reviews. The one act theatrical ballet was based on events both exciting and sinister at the Worlds Fair, as chronicled in the book The Devil in White City by Erik Larson. Carpe Diem performed the music of Bruce Wolosoff live in period costumes with the dancers of Thodos for each performance. Carpe Diem further expanded its boundaries as a string quartet by continuing its collaboration with singer songwriter folk rock guitarist Willy Porter, with concert tours in four states of original music for the ensemble. This collaboration allowed both groups to continue to diversify both their music and their audience. The Carpe Diem String Quartet performed more than seventy concerts throughout the United States, serving populations ranging from small towns to major metropolitan areas. The quartet performed in venues such as large concert halls, intimate recital settings, and auditoriums in inner city and suburban school systems, bringing its traditional and eclectic repertoire to audiences throughout the United States, and received international publicity for its trip to the United Kingdom in November 2010. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 7 | Carpe Diem continued Scale the Summit, in Summit County, Colorado, for the local music students this season, expanding the festival to two weeks this season. Many musicians have long frequented the mountain resorts of Colorado in the summer, bringing with them wealthy students and audiences from out of town, but few institutes offer to teach the children of the families who reside in Colorado year round. Carpe Diem worked with these local students in one on one lessons, small ensemble coachings, orchestral seminars, and improvisational masterclasses. Carpe Diem remains committed to original compositions, new music, and living composers. The quartet released four commercial CD recordings between 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011. Two CDs are on Naxos, the worlds largest classical label a recording of original music of Bruce Wolosoff entitled Songs without Words, and the second volume of disks continuing Carpe Diems cycle of the complete series of string quartets of Sergei Taneyev. Additionally, Live at BoMA the live concert recording of guitarist Willy Porter and Carpe Diem String Quartets first performance is a joint release between the labels Weasel Records and Seize the Music Records, and Montana - composer and Carpe Diem violist Korine Fujiwaras debut compositional recording was released by Seize the Music Records. Carpe Diem also completed recording sessions for its third disk of the complete series of the string quartets of Sergei Taneyev, and for Seize the Day, a new work written for them by Columbus OH composer Richard Smoot, both scheduled for later release. |
