Additional Explanations

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Team up philly is dedicated to empowering girls in under-served philadelphia neighborhoods to lead healthy, confident, and successful lives. Since 2006, team up philly has been working to meet the needs of girls who live in communities lacking access to sports, leadership, and academic after-school and summer programs. Since the first 6-week basketball program team up philly piloted in a west philadelphia gym, programs have expanded to include tutoring, basketball, tennis, swimming, healthy cooking classes, leadership initiatives, life skills training, a program for juvenile offenders, and summer camps. All programs are comprehensive, combining sports, academic support, character and leadership development, and nutrition education with mentoring from caring coaches and tutors. Team up philly utilizes a long- term approach, providing programs for girls throughout middle and high school, in order to have the most lasting and positive impact on the trajectory of their lives. Girls in team up philly programs are succeeding: they are making healthy and positive choices, steering clear of risk factors that derail the dreams of many of their peers; earning acceptances to academically selective schools, colleges and universities; and developing the strong traits of determination, respect, and resilience that will help them succeed.

Additional programs girls leadership: team up philly is building the next generation of women leaders through the girls' leadership project. The senior girls' leadership project provides leadership and life skills training, along with mentoring, for team up philly graduates who want to stay on a positive path. The junior leadership project helps middle school-aged girls develop their voices while building a positive peer network, and engages senior leaders as role models and mentors. Other programs team up philly offers a saturday tennis program that combines sports skills as well as positive traits gained by playing sports: cooperation, resilience, teamwork, discipline, and respect. Girls learn to challenge and support themselves and each other, building strong character traits and a positive peer network. Team up philly's cooking program teaches girls nutrition and healthy cooking. The juvenile justice program works with young non-violent offenders in developing, not only sports skills, but vital skills aimed at personal development.
